From Embers

Manchester post-hardcore quintet From Embers are gearing up for the release of their self-titled debut EP at the end of the month. Blending both carnal ferocity and slick clean melodies, this release is composed of everything any fan of the post-hardcore genre could want. Having shared the stage in the past including Don Broco, We Are Fiction, Deaf Havana, Young Guns and more, the Mancunian outfit also have the experience and drive behind them to take things all the way in support of this release and eventually stand shoulder to shoulder beside their peers.

Pump Action Radio

Sometimes we take our local music scene for granted, and we donít realise that there are bands out there which have been working hard as a unit for longer than you would think. Pump Action Radio fall under this label, as the local four piece, energetic pop rock band have been producing music and playing shows for the last four years. In this time, they have proved their relentless enthusiasm for blasting out their ever growing collection of eccentric punk anthems tinged with pop driven fragments.

CD: “Elemental Journey” by Sonny Landreth

Sonny Landreth

Sonny Landreth has just released a new album. Who? Well that’s what I thought when the small blue cardboard slip case slid out of the envelope into my hand. Okay, from the blurb he is not exactly local (how far is Cornwall from Louisiana?). But this is his 11th album, and after a quick trawl of the internet it appears that this chap is one hell of a blues musician.

Rise To Remain/TRC/Kill The Conversation/Eden In Vain

Weymouth Pavillion

Rise To Remain

Hourglass Promotions continues to work relentlessly to bring the previously neglected music scene of Weymouth some of the best acts on the UK circuit to date. Following bookings of the likes of Hadouken, Funeral for a Friend, InMe and various reputable smaller shows, it was the turn of UK metal uprisers, Rise To Remain to grace the brand new venue setup at Weymouth Pavilion. The sectioned off area of the Ocean Rooms makes the venue slightly bigger than the Crow’s Nest (upstairs) which was used for previous shows, along with the pleasing feature of the doors being left open to allow the sea air to flow through the room.

CD: “Something’s Happening” by The Affected Four

The Affected Four

Something’s Happening is the debut LP from South Coast 60′s Garage ‘revivalists’ The Affected Four. Hailing from Bournemouth/Southampton these guys have come together to make this LP over a shared love of all things Mod/Psych/Soul/Garage/60′s etc, (add or delete as appropriate)!. “Stand Up” heads straight down the “Mod Revival” route with a clear, crisp vocal and (to this reviewer) a hint of Jam-era Weller.

Attack! Attack!/Straight Lines/These Days/Daylight Fireworks

The George, Andover

Attack! Attack!

It was my first trip to Andover tonight and what other way is there to break the ice than to witness Welsh pop rock masters Attack! Attack! back in action after a recent break. Front man Neil Starr hasn’t been sitting still though, as whilst contemplating ideas for the band’s third studio album which they are set to record in July, he took to the road with fellow musician Gavin Butler from The Blackout to tour their side project acoustic album as solo artists.

Saturdaysun

Now, I have not seen these guys live. I missed Bandalism 2, which I am still a bit miffed about it, and Yes, I have read the review and comments on that evening. Nothing like healthy opinions and differences. Either way, those nice Saturdaysun chaps wanted us to listen to their EP “Seagull” which was released on 23rd April this year.

EP: “Split Tongue Cloven Hoof” by XII Boar

XII Boar

Down in the blackest pits of hell, a solitary imp drags its weary bones along a bridge hewn from molten rock that spans a cavern decorated with human skulls. Red skinned and dressed in rags it reaches up with huge bony claws, that have spent endless hours torturing sinners in the seventh circle and rolls aside the mighty stone that covers the entrance to its pitiful cave dwelling.

We Are Shit

When you call your band “Shit” you are just asking for trouble, just imagine it, they have played a stormer of a set and have just left the stage, the audience are demanding encore…what do they shout “Shit Shit Shit”, you can take that one of two ways. Well actually there is a band called “Shit”, and they hail for the seaside town of Poole and you just might know the founder member….Yes it’s local face Bert Brunell who does a Stirling job putting on fine bands at Mr Kyps, surrounded by all this fine music you think Bert would have some great influences to draw on and would make a fine member of any band…………….

Miles and Erica

Mr. Kyps, Poole

Miles and Erica

In October 2011 Miles Hunt & Erica Nockalls of The Wonder Stuff were invited to play an intimate acoustic show at Mr Kyps, the evening went so well that they have returned by request to play on the larger main stage. Tonight’s audience have certainly increased from the last and as the expectant crowd await the 1st act of the night, an announcement is made by the house DJ that the support act has not turned up, disappointingly there is long wait until Miles & Erica take to the stage. It is a great shame that a local act could not have been contacted at the last minute as I’m sure there are many acts out there who would only been too pleased to take up this slot.
