Mr Kyps, Poole

From The Jam

A wet Thursday evening at Mr. Kyps is the intimate setting for a gig of true quality from none other than ‘From The Jam’, featuring original member of The Jam bassist Bruce Foxton, along with Big Country’s Mark Brzezicki and top class vocalist Russell Hastings . Lewis sings the Sound of the Suburbs has the prviledge of kicking off the evening, Lewis is a very well know face on the local music scene and knows exactly how to warm up a crowd like this, songs such as The Specials “Too Much, Too Young”, and The Buzzocks “Ever Fallen In Love” have the right effect in preparing everybody for the night ahead

The entertaining set comes to an end with two corkers, the comedic “Nellie The Elephant” and “Special Brew’ for those of the audience coming to the Bad Manners gig here on the 20th December. After a quick change over it is time for the main attraction that everybody has come to see to revel in some of their great songs.

From The Jam waste no time in getting this crowd onside with a set to die for. Lead singer Russell in rabble rousing mood as he invites the sing-a-longs on opener “Tube Station” and a bullish version of “Eton Rifles”. The power remains with ‘Modern World’ while Bruce (Foxton) enjoys singing the self-penned and lyrically brilliant “Smithers Jones”. Crowd favourite “Pretty Green” gets usual treatment and crowd interaction -Russell once again cajoling us. He then announces that Bruce will be releasing a solo LP in 2012. Two songs from this offering are debuted tonight. First the excellent Jam-inspired “Find My Way Home”,then the mellower but equally fine “Window Shopping”. My least favourite Jam tune “That’s Entertainment” gets a punchier delivery tonight before the real crowd pleasers gets this audience worked up to a frenzy.”Strange Town” is explosive as a mosh ensues, continuing with “When You’re Young” and the slightly slower (these days) “Going Underground” which doesn’t disappoint.

They leave the stage to great applause then return to a chorus of “we are the mods” from this now buoyant crowd. “In The City” is dedicated to Kyp as a thank you for great hospitality past and present, and recognition of this great venue and crowd. They close with “Beat Surrender” then “Town Called Malice” as we all catch our breath! Never a gig for the purists but these songs just don’t date. The line-up may change slightly but the songs will last forever. Once again From The Jam exceed my expectations and most of tonight’s audience’s. Their next trip to Dorset will be in May 2012 where they play the Bournemouth International Centre in a double header with The Beat time cant come any sooner.
