Ninebarrow are a Poole based acoustic folk duo who have been delighting audiences with their simply beautiful melodies and harmonies since forming in 2012. The two life long friends Jon Whitley and Jay Labouchardiere were persuaded by friends and fellow musicians to take things further after shining in informal open folk sessions. The band create traditional story telling folk songs taking inspiration from the beautiful rolling countryside of coastal Dorset. The band won Larmer Tree Breakthrough music award in 2013 and really have not looked back since then. There have been masses of invitations flooding in for Folk clubs and Festival appearances along with plenty of high profile radio
playlisting.
Their debut album “While The Black Thorn Burns” was released this year, getting plenty of high praise from a host of reviewers. An album launch party with their friends “Kadia” at the Lighthouse in Poole followed with virtually every ticket for the event sold. The two chaps have their feet firmly planted on the ground and have not let all this praise go to their heads. They almost seem surprised by the fuss that their music is causing and respectfully take the compliments gracefully. If things continue to snowball the way the have been then “Ninebarrow” should be huge by this time next year performing at all the major festivals.
Myself and Tim Heywood were lucky enough to experience their music at very close hand when the band kindly came into to the Hope FM studio for an engaging interview and acoustic session. To be honest it was quite an experience to hear these guys performing within these intimate surroundings. The live harmonies were simply the best I have ever heard with each song giving me Goosebumps and that feeling in your stomach that you had just heard something really special. They can be seen at a whole host of events throughout the rest of the year including the Purbeck Folk Festival later this month. Catch them while you can as these guys are on a steady climb to the top.
