Mischa & His Merrymen/Eight Days Late/Mg & The Juggernaut

The Anvil, Bournemouth

Mischa and His Merrymen

Having put my ears through their paces 2 nights running at Mr. Kyps I decide to venture along to The Anvil to capture a work colleague’s first gig proper. First observation is how good this venue is looking since it was the “tired” i-Bar. The building has had more than a well deserved lick of paint, the whole venue looks fantastic. And so to the music. Openers MG & The Juggernaut need no introduction. This band Rock-HARD! They open with “Battlefield” which I find rather apt, such is the ferocity of their music! In vocalist and rhythm guitarist Simon they have a man no stranger to a gym, if his upper arms are anything to go by!

Buzzcocks/C-30’s/One Man Destruction Show

Mr Kyps, Poole

Buzzcocks

After the raw abandon of last evenings Indie affair tonight its the turn of the Punks. We are here at Mr. Kyps in the company of Punk Aristocracy. Opening the show is one Adam J. Harmer, better known as One Man Destruction Show. He plays a half hour set of his very own Garage/Rock n Roll/Blues songs in his own inimitable way. This multi instrumentalist is a talented man, but his offerings seem drowned out by the din of chatter by a crowd clearly here for the main event. Those who do choose to listen give the guy warm applause but one cant help but feel for him in what I feel is a tough crowd. Give Adam his due, he doesn’t appear the slightest bit concerned and carries on regardless completing his set to good applause.

Death Of An Artist/Heart In Hand/Burn The Fleet

The Old Fire Station, Bournemouth

Death Of An Artist

This gig is a very big deal for Bournemouth band “Death Of An Artist” for one today they release their debut album “X”, and secondly this is a challenge to step up from playing smaller venues and supports to headlining larger venues. The band formed as a four piece in 2009 releasing an Ep “Clarity Of The Collective’, slowly building up a following gigging around the local area, they recruited another guitarist in the form of Gav Thane to bolster their powerful melodic guitar sound. The new 10 track album was recorded at The Ranch studios in Southampton and promises to launch the band’s career further on to a whole new audience.

Dirtbox Disco

Brummie Punks Dirt Box Disco have a new LP entitled Legends, which looking at their blurb & influences,is what they aspire to be. This band wear their influences firmly on their sleeves and aren’t afraid to have fun with song titles and lyrics. Novelty Punk they’re certainly not-comedic though they are in abundance! LP opener “Dirtbox Days” starts with some frenetic drumming from Maff while Weab I Am’s vocals are clear and concise.

Silverlith

Silverlith. How about it then? Well, four guys from Bournemouth, playing their own special brand of hard rock, have recently released a new five track EP entitled Enslaving Public. They’ve played venues such as Joiners, Private Parties all around the South, and even the 02 Academy in London, and I’m the one to be giving this the once over.

The Pigeon Detectives/The Frequency/Hooligan Choir

Mr Kyps, Poole

The Pigeon Detectives

On a balmy night at Kyps we await one of Indie’s finest, The Pigeon Detectives. But first, two of our local bands get the show off to a flyer. First on are Hooligan Choir. These guys, recently trimmed to a 3 piece play indie with a hint of swagger. The obvious influences are there-musically The Enemy come to mind and I’m hearing a smidgeon of early Weller in singer Elijah’s vocal. Don’t let this put you off though, this is no Mod revival show! The band also have a loud and boisterous following with them tonight. After each song they chant “choir, choir”! This sort of behaviour hasn’t been witnessed at Kyps since Dorset Music Award winners Peace Love & Gloves were in town!

Charlie Bateman

Lead singer and song writer of Hampshire Folk band ‘Thinker” Charlie Bateman is on the 4th June to release his debut solo EP “Fall In Fall Out”. The song writing follows three clear subjects that are all very close to Charlie’s heart…………. Love, Loss and Politics. The six track affair takes you on a short journey into the mind of this folk troubadour, Charlie is clearly passionate and provides some heart warming lyrics delivered by his emotive vocals.

Viking Skull/The Mercy House/In The Hills/Western Sand

The Anvil, Bournemouth

Viking Skull

It’s hot in Bournemouth, 26 degrees all day without a cloud in the sky. So what do 100 metal heads decide to do? Spend 4 hours in a basement listening to some killer bands and drinking themselves silly. It was also assistant manager/Anvil promoter Bear’s Birthday. So take on water you’re gonna need it!
