The Brook, Southampton

9th November 2011

Blackfoot

Yeeeehawww! One of the world’s best southern rock bands (after Skynyrd) is coming to one of the best venues in the South, The Brook. Grab yer Stetson’s, confederate flags and make sure yer Rebel yell is at full volume, ’cause these good ‘ole boys certainly will!

Blackfoot has been delivering kick-ass southern hard rock since the early eighties. With classic albums like Tomcattin’ and Marauder giving them a solid foundation of hits to choose from, expect a full-on show with a whiskey drenched groove.

Soil/Puddle Of Mudd/Dear Superstar/Verses

Talking Heads, Southampton

Puddle of Mudd

This show has been sold out since just about when it was first announced, to have Soil and Puddle of Mudd of the bill together is something very special. But to play intimate venues such as the Talking Heads is just incomprehensible, it is the last night of their UK tour with the venue certainly having what feels like a party atmosphere. As you would expect there are a few ticket less souls outside the venue tonight taking a gamble that there might just be a spare kicking about, as this is certainly a gig that any local rock music fan would love to say ‘I was there’. As if the excitement was not enough there are two top class support act as a tasty prelude to the headliners.

Bournemouth International Centre, Bournemouth

The Specials

Back in 1979 The Specials played at the Stateside Club in Bournemouth as part of the original Two Tone tour with then label mates Madness and The Selector. 2011 The Specials are back in Bournemouth at a slightly larger venue, The Bournemouth International Centre, celebrating their 30th Anniversary, the audience and the band may look a bit older than the fresh faced youngsters in 1979 but the enthusiasm is the same.

CD: “The Better Half Of Me” by Canada Water

Canada Water

Canada Water are back! The Bournemouth based pop punk favourites took a lengthy break from releasing their latest single “The Better Half of Me”, (which was most likely related to their lengthy break from gigging) but finally it has been released after being mastered at the iconic, Abbey Road Studios. The band only recently returned to gigging when they supported Not Advised at The Old Fire Station as a part of the local Musicosity Festival, so it was probably about time to dust off their laptops and upload their latest track to the public.

The Mission/Fields of the Nephilim/Gene Loves Jezebel

Brixton Academy, London

The Mission

Tonight was a gig with a line-up that has people travelling far and wide to see. The opportunity to see Goth heavy weights The Mission, and Fields of the Nephilim, on the same bill, along with Gene Loves Jezebel is something that no fan wanted to miss. This would be a night to remember. The banter in the queue on the way in reveals that spirits are high, and certainly a lot of travelling from far and wide.

Mr Kyps, Poole

Miles Hunt & Erica Nockalls

It is acoustic night tonight at Mr Kyps as Poole’s premier live music venue plays host to none other than Wonder Stuff members Miles Hunt & Erica Nockalls. Opening for them this evening are local legends Lady Winwoods Maggot, (well, three eighths of them)! Tonight they refer to themselves as the “Brotherhood of Maggot”. They begin by “Chasing the Cat”, then head for their ‘Private Idaho’. Mid-song banter is the order of the day as the guys tell stories, swap jokes, generally keeping the mood light and jolly.

Pop Will Eat Itself

If you were a gigging music fan in the 1990’s chances are that you owned a T-shirt by Ned’s Atomic Dustbin, Carter USM, The Wonder Stuff or Pop Will Eat Itself. I think in terms of sales these three bands between them sold more T-shirts than records. The pages of NME, Record Mirror and Sounds were filled with stories of the antics of the Grebo’s, the Crusties, and the Goths who played countless gigs up and down the country.
