The Brook, Southampton

STiff Little Fingers

Northern Irish punk idols Stiff Little Fingers return to Southampton’s Brook as part of their annual UK Tour and tonight the venue is completely full with an expectant crowd who by the feel of the atmosphere are all in for a great night. Tonight disappointingly there is no support band and the bar staff do their best to keep up with demand from the impatient punters who are all after a pre-gig drink. It is Friday night after all.

The Brook, Southampton

Toyah

Toyah Wilcox-singer, actress, TV personality. Just for tonight though it will be singer. Southampton’s Brook is playing host tonight as we take a trip down memory lane with the 30th Anniversary Tour, rather aptly named “from sheep farming to Anthem”. Toyah is in fine form and good voice from the off tonight. Earlier she was signing autographs & smiling for camera shots but its the songs we’re here for.

Scott Matthews

The Old Fire Station, Bournemouth

Scott Matthews

I had only briefly heard of Scott Matthew previous to seeing him, knowing what I would say is he most popular song, ‘Elusive’, so was waiting to see what he could offer me. And my conclusion? Pretty Damn Good! The stage was set perfectly for the music with dim lighting, an inscence stick burning and a feather lamp in the corner. There was a real relaxed and almost dream- like feel to the room, it was surreal to be so chilled out in anywhere other than your bedroom. As he humbly approached the stage and sat down, the audience simply floated away.

CD: “Nearly Done!” by The Martin Kitcher Band

The Martin Kitcher Band

“Somethings Got to Give” blatantly ‘borrows’ the guitar riff from the Monkees “Steppin’ Stone” but isn’t a bad LP opener. Whilst Nikky F reminds one of the Toy Dolls vocally! Devo (remember me) evokes memories of Devo themselves. One wonders if this is deliberate or just coincidental! “I Actually Rather Like You” makes me think of Adam and the Ants pre “Kings” era and it’s at this point and further on while listening I feel the artist wears his Post Punk influences very firmly on his sleeves. This is further displayed on “King of Rock n Roll” with the Ants wailing & chanting sound in the song.

The Brook, Southampton

Y & T

YT/A taste of vintage Classic Rock was the order of the night as we headed to one of Southampton’s premier live music venues, The Brook. Legendary hard rockers Y&T were in town to show everyone how a concert should be played, lots of guitars, lots of songs and one hell of a good time!

EP: “The First Collapse” by Deadlines

Deadlines

Deadlines are a 6 piece progressive metalcore band from Southampton which features ex members of Bury Tomorrow, Ghosts on Pegasus Bridge, In Her Ruin and Upon Distant Shores. With a fair number of talented bands emerging from Southampton’s ever strengthening music scene recently, Deadlines will be looking to class themselves as another flourishing band originating from the area in the near future. Their live shows are described as ‘intense ‘and ‘unforgettable’, so the news of their debut studio effort will have excited more than a few followers of the band.

Wheatus/Mc Frontalot/Math The Band/City Stereo

Mr Kyps, Poole

Wheatus

I’m guessing that for a few people, tonight was a night for reminiscing, with Wheatus being one of those feel good bands whose most popular tracks such as Teenage Dirtbag were released over 10 years ago. There was decent turnout for the opening band City Stereo, who got things warmed up with their catchy pop rock. Having travelled from just down the road in Salisbury, this currently unsigned band have just finished up a 14 date tour supporting McFly.

CD: “Megakill v.2 Turbo” by The Inciders

The Inciders

For fans of 2nd generation Punk this collection of songs is a ‘must hear’! Title track “Megakill v.2 Turbo” starts off with a sample then quickly progresses to a 90mph delivery of unintelligible lyrics & aggression. Strangely the middle 8 is melodic to say the least, which is a constant throughout this LP. On first listen I’m leaning toward a generous influence from The Exploited but you could pick from any number of Punk bands of that genre. The second track, “Blood Will Be Spilt” is another fast paced little number with heavy percussion and a theme of War. The lyric ‘Blood Will Be Spilt when War Breaks Out’ is sung loudly in the chorus and is a bold statement in itself.

Bournemouth O2 Academy

Featuring: Brothers Grimmer, New Royalty, Sirpico, Constellation, Empire Affair, Fearne The Frequency and One Dead Ninja

Bandalsim

Saturday Night, Bournemouth O2 Academy,it can only mean one thing – BANDALISM! Eight local bands, putting on a show to highlight what is great about our towns music scene. Opening proceedings are Stoner Rockers Brothers Grimmer. Having seen these guys once before and taking little notice I take more interest this time around. They open with a wall of sound, accompanied by their own “Bez”, dancer Macko (Michael) Grimmer-robotics/body popping, you name it he does it. The Brothers sound takes (to this reviewer) a huge dollop of Pearl Jam,mixes a touch of psychedelic groove and a smattering of Grunge to their experimental brand of Rock.

Terrorvision/The Breakdowns

on October 7th, 2011 at 23:21
Posted In: Gigs, Reviews, Ross

The Old Fire Station, Bournemouth

It’s Friday night, unusually warm and Terrorvision are in town. A very early start means I’ve missed most of support act The Breakdowns set. What I do hear/see is actually pretty good. Musically its Lizzy-esque with a decent vocal. They end with “High School” and receive good applause.
