Featuring: Crimson Waters, Daisie Ukaladies, Dorset Phil, Ladies Of The Lawn, The Darwins, and The Dead Eyes
It is an absolutely beautiful day here in Wimborne; it’s the middle of Spring but feels more like Summer, an ideal day for some alfresco music. Today is the third annual Buskers Bash competition. It all starts with 12 local artists/groups who will perform at four locations around Wimborne – The Green Man Pub, The Rising Sun Pub, Mill Lane and the Square. Each artist/group has their very own busker’s box where the general public can purchase tokens to put in the box of their favourite artists. The Competition begins at 11am and goes right through til’ 5pm where the top six finalists with the most tokens get to perform at the Allendale Centre in front of three judges.
The day coincides with the annual record store day and Wimborne’s music store “Square Records” draws masses of vinyl junkies from all over the area, seeking “One Off” never to be repeated offers. The Buskers Bash is an ideal way to entertain these folk after they have made their purchases. The artistís just roll up to their pitch on the allotted time; perform for 20 minutes and then scuttle off to the next. The crowds around Wimborne are delighted with the cross section of entertainment. There are great sets from the very popular “The Daisie Ululadies” a 4 piece all female outfit who rework modern classics to their own unique styling.
The “Ladies of The Lawn” actually roll up with their own piece of AstroTurf and perform a well delivered acapella set of 80’s classics that get the audience members of a certain age singing along. “Dorset Phil” puts a twist of lighted comedy into his original Folk songs. ‘The DeadEyes’ bestow some Progressive Folk onto Wimborne square with traditional instruments and a curious looking object called a “hand pan”. “The Darwin’s” end the day on a high with a great set of all originals songs from their album “Written in Black & White”.
The Top 6 from the day who went into the final were The Wimborne Ukulele Band, The Daisie Ukuladies, Ladies of the Lawn, Nicole McNally, Crimson Water and The DeadEyes. The overall Winner from the final at the Allendale Centre as voted by the judges were “The DeadEyes”, with second place going to the youthful “Crimson Water” and third were upcoming star of the future Nicole McNally. The event is organised by Chris Brown, Mel Gudger and Jo Skipp; purely on a voluntary basis. Massive praise must go to them and their teams of volunteers for a extremely enjoyable, well put together event. Roll on next year!!
