New Zealand four-piece Devilskin have been making quite a name for themselves with regular trips over to Europe to entertain their ever growing army of fans. The band have recently released their 2nd album “Be like the River” which has elevated them with gigs supporting “Airbourne” and a slot at this year’s Download Festival. The band is made up of Jennie Skulander (Vocals), Tony “Nail” Vincent (Guitar), with Father and son (also Jennie’s Brother-in Law & Nephew) Rhythm section of Paul Martin (Bass) and Nic Martin (Drums). Tonight the band head for a rather intimate show at the Anvil in Bournemouth; a town where they have never played before, but after a couple of gigs locally at the Talking Heads in Southampton word has got around and the place is heaving by the time the support acts start.

The first of these is “Adelante” a five-piece band who bravely play their first gig here tonight. The band despite showing a few nerves give a good account of themselves, seemingly competent musicians with plenty of promise. The band have a twin-guitar melodic rock-type sound with nicely put together tunes like “Agoraphobia”, with a lovely darkly laid bass intro and the upbeat “Dreaming California” which the crowd seemed to love. The vocals and stage presence were honestly lacking at times and I’m sure with practice and experience these can be worked on.

Next up are one of Bournemouth’s premier bands the “Deltorers”, a hard working band who seem to really be getting out there and making a name for themselves. The three-piece consist of three truly excellent musicians of Nathan (Guitar), Brenden (Bass) and Zoot (Drums) who when they get together on stage generate a chemistry and excitement that really thrills audiences. The trio make an incredible sound with influences coming from many areas. The band’s epic new single “Love is Overrated” is a grungy “Middle Eastern” mix of effect-induced guitar, coupled with punchy atmospheric rhythms.

Their incredible energy allied with their impressive song creations keep every member of the audienceís full attention throughout. They end with another masterpiece “I Guess We’ll Wait & See” which starts off gently with a little cluster of rim shots; before building to a huge wall of sound, coupled with Nathan’s considerable vocal range. The band leave the stage with plenty of positive noise from the well-entertained crowd.

Next up are “Endea” who seem so psyched up for this performance, they have an excited home crowd in front of them and come out of the traps on full throttle. The four-piece fronted by extrovert “Grimshaw” provide a thumping riff-driven Rock experience packed with plenty of huge tunes which include the powerful “Tormentor” and the band’s latest single “Roman”. The band are keen to keep the momentum of the last band and push the audience to get involved with a singalong during “Oblivion”, before Grimshaw grabs a huge flag waving it over the heads of the audience just to remind us who we have just seen. A fantastic audio and visual experience from a band who really love to entertain.

Endea 1–2–3–4–5–6–7–8

Devilskin are finally ready to take to the stage and by now the Anvil is absolutely rammed full, with everyone jostling for a space to get a view of this band that have already shown the UK they are destined for great things. Kicking off with “House 13” from the new album with huge and heavy guitar riffs ripping through the sound rig before Jennie’s epic vocals hits the ears of the awaiting, ever-growing army of fans. The band clearly show no signs of Jetlag or tiredness after their long journey around UK and Ireland playing six gigs in one week.

The band play a great mix of tunes from their first two albums and with credit to this musically well-educated audience they already seem to know the vast majority of the band’s considerable tunes. Jennie’s emotive voice just seems to improve with each gig, with a huge range that include some growls on tunes like “Limbs” and “F.Y.I.”. The band are equally happy on a small stage like this or on a Festival bill giving each audience 100% every time. There is quick trip down memory lane with a great rousing version of Dio’s “Holy Diver”, before the band round things off with a trio of tunes closing with the frantic “Violation” leaving the audience totally satisfied with their memorable performance.
