Inglorious

After reaching the Rock Chart’s coveted number one spot with their second album, Inglorious are on the road once again to perform it live to their ever-growing army of fans. The band who formed in February 2014 are currently riding the crest of a wave with plenty of airplay on the rock radio stations. Tonight is the second night of the tour and the band are ecstatic that the show has sold all of its 550 tickets and the capacity crowd have arrived early in readiness for the opening act. The band have not just brought any old support with them, they have brought along Toby Jepson’s new band Wayward Sons.

Wayward Sons arrive on stage to a huge welcome from the Southampton crowd and energetically launch into “Alive”, an epic tune which has the ability to lift the crowd right from the start. Toby Jepson who has previously fronted “Little Angels” and “Gun” is a frontman on a mission, pushing the audience to lift their hands high above their heads and clapping along. The band’s debut album “Ghosts of Yet to Come” is packed full of great tunes and this well-rehearsed line-up delivers them in some style. The 5 piece band belt out tunes like “Killing Time” and the epic “Crush”, gaining a really positive reaction from the enthusiastic crowd. Toby’s voice is on absolute top form and as his powerful lungs belt out final number “Until the End” it is clear that he has formed a band that is fit to perform on much larger stages. He announced that they would be doing a headline tour in April and I’m sure much of this audience will be back for more.

I cannot help think that this is possibly going to be the last tour where Inglorious play these smaller sized venues, this band’s popularity is clearly increasing and I’m sure the audience are going to make sure they really make the most of this intimate show here at the Brook tonight. The intro music starts and it’s the theme from sports TV show “Grandstand”, which raises a few smiles amongst the older members of the audience. The tune dies away and the band launch into their opening number “Read All About it” and boy they sound good in here tonight, right from the start you can hear every instrument so clearly.

Frontman Nathan James is dressed in a black jacket with silver wings on his lapels, along with some glittering silver boots. With his cowardly lion-style mane and slightly camp style, he nails the part of a frontman and the audience lap up everything he has to say. With a powerful vocal style along the lines of David Coverdale he effortlessly nails every line he sings. The band are on fine form delivering some top-notch performances with guitarists Andreas Eriksson and Drew Lowe clearly showing rock is not dead, with some excellent Ritchie Blackmore-influenced riffs. Bassist Colin Parkinson and Drummer Phil Beaver get to show that they are one of the tightest rhythm sections in the business with a short burst of excellence.

Partway through the band’s set Nathan and Drew take a break from their original material to pay tribute to the late Chester Bennington and Chris Cornell with some stunningly good acoustic versions of “Numb” and “Black Hole Sun”. The band pick up once again carrying on their huge momentum with yet more big tunes including “I Don’t Need Your Loving” and “High Class Woman”, before leaving the stage to massive applause from the excited crowd. The band soon reward the audience’s positive support, returning to play a two song encore which will solidly stay in the memory of every member of the crowd here tonight. The world needs more rock bands like “Inglorious”, a flamboyant frontman with echoes of Freddie Mercury; creative guitarists with an epic sound, a rock solid rhythm section and well written original material……what more can an audience ask for.
