If I’m being completely honest I have never actually reviewed any music before that contains a trumpet as the main instrument. I don’t even really know any trumpet players apart from the late Roy Castle from Children’s TV program Record Breakers, or Sonia Fowler from Eastenders (Really!!) and yes I remember Sean Moore from the Manic Street Preachers who played once on the track “Kevin Carter”, but he’s a drummer really. Well as it happens I’ve known a chap called Harry Bassett for quite a while now, he despite his young years has an amazing amount of experience performing in bands like Ferndown Concert Brass, Dorset Youth Jazz Orchestra, The Decatonics, Lady Winwoods Maggot, Mischa and his Merry Men, Gugge 2000, James Emmett’s Ragtime Revellers and recently he has begun playing with fellow Trumpeter Patrick Fernando Peiro in a 10 piece fusion band called “Subbzero”. Harry is a Bournemouth-based musician; who is also available for recording sessions, arts company projects and beginner brass lessons.

Harry Bassett

He first found his love for music at just three years old after seeing the Bournemouth Carnival Band, who dress as Spiderman. Little did he know that after a year of following them obsessively, the band would make him an honorary member. Harry began playing bugle in the band at age seven and quickly transitioned to cornet, taking regular lessons at school. For a number of years, he played with the Spiderman band, attending all their performances, and quickly realised he wanted to make more music.

With all this experience under his belt, Harry is on the verge of the next step of his journey by starting studies on the BMus Trumpet Performance course at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music & Dance, London. Despite receiving the maximum funding (loan) possible, financing the “extras” in order to benefit from this opportunity of studying at Trinity has left him somewhat bewildered. Not only does he need to contribute to his accommodation and daily living, he also needs to fund a range of assistive equipment, instruments and accessories. To raise funds for this the enterprising young musician has set up a Virgin Money Giving page, along with a fundraising gig in Bournemouth and recorded an instrumental solo EP.

The Ep was recorded with the expert help of local legend Matt Black at Hangover Hill Studio in Blandford. It is made up of six well-known tracks that feature Harry as the lead, with some splendidly added accompaniment; with each song, you can feel the emotional connection that this accomplished musician has given to the music. All of us here at Rock Regeneration wish Harry the best of luck with his future goals. With his positive drive; talent and constant enthusiasm, we are sure he will succeed in everything he aims for.
