Single: “Headspace” by The Better Dead
Headspace is the second single from Brighton-based two-piece The Better Dead, featuring Steven Speck and Cam Jessop.
Written, recorded and produced entirely by the band, the track was created primarily in their home studio, with drums recorded at Brighton Electric Studios. The duo also handled the mixing themselves, while former Searching Alaska guitarist Toby Campen completed the mastering.
Speaking about the single, vocalist and guitarist Steven Speck explains:
“Headspace captures the false sense of invincibility that comes with being under the influence. We bring massive riffs, sharp hooks and a dark lyrical core, placing us somewhere between Royal Blood, Alice In Chains, Avenged Sevenfold and Bullet For My Valentine, while retaining a character that’s distinctly our own.
The lyrics represent a very careless time in my life—certainly a darker period looking back now, but something I had to go through. The energy of the song perfectly reflects my attitude towards life at the time. Everything was quite full on.”
Headspace begins with a slow-burning intensity before erupting into a face-melting wall of sound. Towering guitar riffs collide with pulsating, rib-crushing rhythms, creating a track that is both ferocious and undeniably memorable. It feels like a statement of intent from a band rapidly building creative momentum.
Drawing influence from some of modern rock and metal’s biggest names while forging an identity entirely their own, The Better Dead deliver a song packed with raw emotion and relentless energy. The visceral lyrics revisit a turbulent chapter of Steven’s life, exploring recklessness, vulnerability and the consequences of living without restraint. Combined with the band’s crushing instrumentation and razor-sharp song writing, the result is a fresh, compelling take on modern heavy music.
If Headspace is a sign of what’s to come, then an album of this calibre would be an exciting prospect. This is a powerful, emotionally charged release that deserves to reach a far wider audience.
