Mr. Kyps, Poole

Saints Of Sin

After what seems like absolutely ages Mr Kyps brings back their showcase gig night featuring up and coming local bands. I understand these nights sadly are nowhere near as lucrative as touring bands or tribute bands, but they are very important to keep the area’s original music scene alive. Tonight we have an eclectic mix of three bands that most certainly would not appear on the same bill on any other line-up.

The first of these is “Plastic Jeezus”, a three-piece fronted by Simon Fernand who sings and plays an eight string ukulele. These guys write songs using cleverly put together lyrics and it’s clear from the start they don’t take themselves too seriously with some rather dry humour. The free beer rider backstage has taken its toll and though their set is not perfect it is really entertaining. There are great songs like “Buzzcuts” featuring the addictive “Don’t talk to the driver while the vehicle is in motion, don’t talk to the passengers because you really don’t want to know them”. You will have to believe me when sung over and over it is an ear-worm of a lyric. There is the genius of “Kenneth” which shows the really fun side of this trio, sadly though it was lost on most of this audience tonight. Their set ends on a high with a medley of popular songs starting with the Star Wars “Cantina Band” theme. The guys leave the stage to some enthusiastic applause, one can’t help but think that they were not appreciated enough here tonight.

A complete change of pace next with Bournemouth’s “Deltorers”, the band litterely hit the stage with a wall of sound and a massive injection of unbounding energy. The band give a nod towards the distorted experimental noise of the 90’s grunge era with a modern injection. A sort of mix between Mudhoney and The Pixies with effect-laden distorted guitars, coupled with a powerful rhythm section. Frontman Nathan delivers masses of unstoppable, energetic guitar riffs with his excellent vocal range. Their set is a very visual experience with a soundtrack of tunes that equally thrill and entertain throughout. They end with a piledriver of a track “I Guess We’ll Wait and See” which has some really impressive; irregular drum patterns, put over soaring guitars and thunderously furious basslines. The audience are not sure what has hit them but show loads of appreciation. The band leave them contented they have given every drop of energy within their fantastic performance.

The final band need no introduction; “Saints of Sin” formed back in 2013 with a goal of bringing the glam rock music of Los Angeles back to the forefront of peopleís minds. The mission has taken them all over the UK playing a host of music festivals and rock clubs, gaining an army of fans along the way. Tonight the band have a team of cameramen on hand to capture the gig for future release. These guys have certainly not stood still, as well as the usual favourites from their debut release there are new songs; such as the epic “Sunset Stripin”, “Running” and soon to be classic ìDevil You Need”. Front man “Rui” has clearly read the frontman rule book and knows every trick in the book at keeping audiences happy. He is all over the stage and at one point in the audience making sure each and every one of us has a great time at a Saints of Sin gig. There is no denying that this band can play, and when you get to see what the camera crew has recorded tonight you may well just want to join them at one of their monumental gigs.
