The Terrys/South Summit/The Lonely Surf

Old Fire Station, Bournemouth

Tonight is no ordinary Sunday night in Bournemouth. At the Old Fire Station, an Aussie invasion of sorts arrives in town as The Terrys and South Summit stop off as part of their 16-date tour around Europe.

Before they take to the stage, tonight’s local support act The Lonely Surf warm up the crowd. The quartet are preparing for the release of their debut album “Keep It Together”, and the audience are treated to a selection of tracks from it. Dom, Dan, Matt and drummer George combine to create a fresh sound that sits somewhere between Pop and Rock.

The band are blessed with a fine guitarist in Matt, who provides some great atmospheric textures. Alongside this are some excellent vocal harmonies, with frontman Dom delivering the majority of the melodic lead vocals. The rhythms are thoroughly infectious, with George and Dan showing their creative chemistry throughout the set. With tracks like new single Car Conversations and the album’s title track Keep It Together, the band’s vein of originality has certainly taken a huge leap forward. The lively audience show their appreciation at the end of an impressive 35-minute set.

Next up are South Summit, who hail from Perth but are keen to point out their New Zealand heritage. The band features Josh Trindall on bass guitar, Isaiah Reuben on lead vocals, Fynn Samorali on lead guitar, Nehemiah Reuben on rhythm guitar and Nathan Osbourne on drums.

Their Telecaster and Stratocaster guitars create two very different atmospheric sounds, while the rhythm section provides solid Reggae and Dub-inspired foundations. The band bring together a wide range of influences, from Rock to Hip Hop, along with a sprinkling of sunny South-West Coast vibes. Isaiah, with his strong vocal delivery and energetic stage presence, quickly gets the Bournemouth crowd onside.

A few technical issues with the guitar pedalboard power supply actually work in the band’s favour, leading to an impromptu ad-lib and crowd sing-along. The band’s unique sound shines through on majestic tunes like Top of the Hill and Ottoway. A splendid cover of The Police’s Roxanne extends the party atmosphere even further before the band leave the stage having clearly earned themselves a new legion of fans.

Considering it’s a Sunday night, and The Terrys are a band from over ten thousand miles away, they receive a huge welcome as they take to the stage. The quartet’s enthusiasm is totally infectious and as they open with the track Spezial, the audience are already singing along.

The band sport four impressive moustaches and a baby-faced bass player, Trent Cooper. The moustaches belong to Jacob Finch on vocals, Caleb Tasker on lead guitar, Ben Salvatori on rhythm guitar and at the back, Cameron Cooper on drums.

Their songs are packed with contagious melodies, guitar riffs aplenty and relatable, memorable lyrics. Hopscotch, Eraser and No Bad Days are all notable standouts. At one point, they invite a young lad from the audience on stage to do a “shoey” — pouring beer into his shoe (in this case, a Vans trainer) and drinking it in one go while the crowd cheers him on. The task is successfully executed, earning him plenty of applause.

This gig comes towards the end of a triumphant tour, with a sold out London show at The Garage still ahead. Recently we’ve seen plenty of Australian bands making waves in Europe; with Parkway Drive, Amyl and the Sniffers and Airbourne leading the charge. The Terrys could easily follow in their footsteps as they have all the right ingredients in place.

We’re treated to a stunning semi-acoustic version of the late Ozzy Osbourne’s “Changes”, before the band deliver their final blow.

Catalonia Dreams is one of those songs that sticks in your head, reminiscent of tracks from films like American Pie. It has the potential to be their “Down Under” or “Beds Are Burning” — a true earworm with fantastic instrumentation you won’t forget. It’s a perfect way to close the set, ramping up the atmosphere and ending the night on a high.

From the first band to the last, we’ve been thoroughly entertained on a night many of us will remember for a long time.
