Griever/Imminence/Deference

The Anvil, Bournemouth

After a major refurbishment, The Anvil looked the business. It was the second night open and already live music was on the agenda. That night local heroes Griever headlined their hometown gig with support from Imminence, Deference and Old Boy. As usual I was late and missed the first band Old Boy (sorry guys, have to catch you another time) but was down in the basement for Deference from Southampton. Kicking out crushing Metal with a nod to Killswitch Engage they gave a good account of themselves and won themselves a few new fans among the young crowd that attended.

Deference 1–2–3–4

Next up were Sweden’s Imminence and these guys added a professional sheen to proceedings. Their Metalcore was well polished and drenched in teenage angst. Although their stage look was very fashion conscious, flowing cardigans and grey collarless shirts with braces, they put on a modern rock show and had some interesting tunes, “Snakes and Ladders” in particular reminded me of At The Drive In. Good stuff.

Immenence 1–2–3–4–5

Griever are no strangers to the Anvil and were out to turn the night into one massive party. The Metalcore masters were on top form and delivered a set that rocked the foundations. Solid guitar playing and thunderous rhythms overlaid with harsh and clean vocals, makes me think that these guys won’t be unsigned for much longer. As the circle pit took a turn for the worse, with one of the punters getting himself knocked out, the lead singer stopped the rest of the band to ensure he was alright. It’s that kind of care that ensures fan loyalty and make the band stand out from their peers. All in all, it was one hell of a Thursday evening.
