The Brook, Southampton

Y & T

YT/A taste of vintage Classic Rock was the order of the night as we headed to one of Southampton’s premier live music venues, The Brook. Legendary hard rockers Y&T were in town to show everyone how a concert should be played, lots of guitars, lots of songs and one hell of a good time!

First on stage were British melodic rock outfit Stampede, they did a good job of coping with the limited stage space, to turn out an old school sound straight out of the eighties. Which isn’t surprising as the band first came to light in 1981 and are now back twenty something odd years later. They delivered a tight performance but everyone was just killing time waiting for the headliners.

Y&T must be one of the world’s most underrated bands around today. They kicked off their career delivering classic albums like Earthshaker, Mean Streak and Black Tiger records that were an integral part of the early 80’s rock scene. The Brooks punters were in for a treat as the Californians took the stage and blitzed us with opener “On With The Show”. From that first song, until the last one three hours later, we had just about every major track from their back catalogue and a couple from new opus Facemelter.

Watching Y&T on stage you can see that these guys are not just going through the motions, they bloody love every minute of it as do the crowd. Set highlight for me, although it was a hard choice with so many excellent compositions on offer, was the outstanding “I Believe” were Dave Meniketti’s superb guitar work propelled the atmosphere of the gig to another level.

They played here last year (but I missed them) and if they play next year, I for one will beg, borrow and steal to see a show like that again.
