Regular readers will already know that I’m quite partial to local Bournemouth band Solcura’s Alternative/Rock and Grunge-infused sound. Harry, Dan, Sam and Jacob are a solid quartet who while having one foot in the past on their heady love of the Seattle music scene, they are also open to modern creativity. This month sees the release of a new single “I Am Weak”, which reveals quite a different sound from the previous two releases; with the band harking back to the days of Soundgarden’s ground-breaking “Bad Motor Finger” and Tool’s long-playing epic “Opiate”.

The whole creation process provided plenty of teamwork with many people and locations involved. The Drums/Bass were laid down at Absolute Music in Poole and the Guitars/Vocals were tracked in various other locations. The mixing and mastering was provided by the faultless hand of Paul Visser at The Recording Studio London. Lead Vocalist Harry explains “this is probably our first truly collaborative songwriting effort; the whole track emerged within about 30 minutes in one of those seemingly predestined, creative moments where everyone has an idea in the bag that happens to slot in with the others perfectly. Sam had the solo basslines; Dan had been playing with the guitar riffs, Jacob had some big fills and a halftime section in mind and I had written lyrics that just worked with the music perfectly.”

The track begins with a smouldering fragile vocal over an eerie and anomalous bassline, with the a building crescendo of crushing guitar riffs; crashing drum fills, interspersed with memorable breakdowns. The anthemic chorus settles somewhere between the styles of Layne Staley and Maynard James Keenan with vocalist Harry doing a fine job providing the emotive power to portray the lyrical substance of the track. These guys are creatively on the money and as they release more of their material, you can see the more layers that they have. With their recent tracks such as “Keep it Close” and “Cold Days”, the quartet have found a rich vein of artistry derserving of much more recognition.
