Single: “What You Trying To Say” by The Whitely Lake Band

Following up on their debut album A Drop in the Ocean, Dorset rock outfit The Whitley Lake Band are back with their brand new single, What You Trying To Say. The track was showcased when the band played at the Lighthouse in Poole during Hangerhill’s Live & Unheard event in October (see video below).

The song was born out of one of the band’s jam sessions, along with Richie’s desire to get some “whoooa whooa yeahs” into a singalong anthem that everyone can relate to.

Richie explains: “A relatable take on relationship communication, lyrically the song tackles the frustrating, eternal cycle of miscommunication in relationships – delving into the second-guessing, defensive behaviours, and the universal struggle to figure out exactly what is going on from both sides. It’s a stomping rock song born out of a simple jam session and a desire for a big, relatable singalong moment.”

Anyone who has been in a long-term relationship can relate to this theme – there are times when you simply cannot understand each other, and that is when patience and understanding need to take over.

Sonically, the track is powered by Martin’s driving drum beat and Luke’s melodic basslines, while Richie adds notably sweet melodic guitars alongside his no-nonsense vocals. The infectious, crowd-pleasing chorus provides yet another tune that is sure to become a live favourite in the band’s set.

The trio have more music on the horizon, with this being just the first sample of what they have been working on. The track was recorded during a productive studio session that also yielded two further singles, Ghosts of Whitley Lake and Where Did You Go. Both are slated for release later this year as writing for the band’s sophomore album continues.
