Cold Culprits

North Yorkshire Indie/Rock solo artist, Cold Culprits (aka multi-instrumentalist) Andy C Watson; continues his steady stream of musical output with a new single “My Sweetest Friend”, released on 26th February. Andy explains “the track is another musical departure from the usual Cold Culprits punk sensibilities; leaning towards melancholy and regret, with poppish undertones. I’m not entirely sure where this song came from. It’s the product of a freezing cold January, stuck in a house with no double glazing. I usually start the writing on an old acoustic guitar, trying out chord combinations and working on lyrics. For My Sweetest Friend, I just had this feeling; sort of uneasy and empty. I wrote a few words around it; then played arpeggios on the electric guitar, rising and descending relentless notes. It all sort of fell into place pretty quickly from there, but getting the right violin sounds for the ending is a whole different story.”

If you have followed the reviews I have done over the last year or so for this artist with his singles “Candy Thief”, “Setting Suns” and his debut EP “EPisode 1” you will see the huge versatility that he has to offer. This new song is once again something that shows steady evolutions from those first tracks and that’s what I love to see from an artist. An artist without any preconceived ideas with the ability to explore their own creative abilities and see where the journey takes them. When he first started making music the idea to have a violin played on one of his songs may have seemed a little obscure for a mainly Punk-influenced artist, but when you listen to the new track it seems completely at home within it. As you can see below the song features some clever lyrical moments, with the topsy turvy lyrics creating somewhat of an interesting series of conundrums for the listeners to decipher. The song’s melodic guitar hook and its catchy rhythms, along with the woven-in violin make for a unique sounding track that continues the musical journey for this talented musical all-rounder.

Lyricsl
I saw my empire in your eyes
A place I can pass the time
I sent an army deep beneath your skin
So you would march with me hypnotised
A double barrel full of laughs
I pulled the trigger on all your cash
Now you’re bleeding everything you have
Kerosene, I’m your perfect match
One more crime to pacify

I will let you down when we run aground
Oh my sweetest friend
All these wasted memories that weigh me down
I guess this is how it ends
I will let you down when we run aground
Oh my sweetest friend
All these wasted memories that weigh me down
I guess this is how it ends

I need a pocket full of time to change
But all I carry is this rusty blade
And I’m cutting everything I love away
I’m the plague on your palisade
One more crime to pacify

I will let you down when we run aground
Oh my sweetest friend
All these wasted memories that weigh me down
I guess this is how it ends
I will let you down when we run aground
Oh my sweetest friend
All these wasted memories that weigh me down
I guess this is how it ends

I reminisce about the things to come
I look forward to all that’s gone
I reminisce about the things to come
I look forward to all that’s gone
I reminisce about the things to come
I look forward to all that’s gone

My Sweetest Friend is out on 26 February, available through all the usual streaming and download services.
