Brandon Moss & Joe Grist aka South Coast Synth/Pop Goth duo Velour have just released a brand new single called “Keepsakes”. It is the bands first release since their debut EP “Last Night at the Paradise Lost” back in May 2024.

Synth player Joe explains; “we decided to take a different approach to this single, producing it entirely ourselves and leaning toward a more grand-ballad style with an upbeat epilogue. It was also our first time experimenting with incorporating instruments other than synthesizers, incorporating a lead saxophone solo throughout the choruses and bridges”.

“Lyrically, the track was written with two parallel themes running side-by-side. The verses comparing a strained and potentially unfaithful relationship to a vitriolic card game between two dissatisfied lovers, whereas the chorus has a more tragic desperate quality, failing to let go of emotions that are potentially toxic and unhealthy. “Keepsakes came to be after developing a chord pattern I’d written as early as 2018, when Brandon and I were in separate bands making very different music. Over the years the structure, arrangement and lyrical content changed but the main hook remained the same. It was only once Brandon’s lead vocal melody was added that the song felt complete.”

The band have released an official music video alongside the track that echoes the single’s artwork, set in a dreamy gothic setting featuring the two dissatisfied lovers from the story as well as performances from Joe & Brandon.

Personally it is always great to see how far a band have come from their humble beginnings. To see Joe & Brandon, who are still a relatively new band, using their chemistry to push themselves further is fantastic. The new elements have certainly given further dimension to this track. Though the genre may not be to everyone’s taste, I’m sure when people get to hear this impressive composition in all its glory on the radio or via Youtube, it could easily be a palette changer.
