EP: “Perception” by NÆMA
Bournemouth’s Alt/Rock outfit NÆMA have finally unveiled their debut seven-track Ep Perception, following the gradual release of their first few singles. The quartet bring together an eclectic mix of styles; blending elements of Funk, Pop, Metal, Trance, electronic synths and even Spanish guitar. The band’s line-up is notably diverse in influence, featuring a pop vocalist, an alternative rock guitarist, a funk bassist and a metal drummer.
The Ep was recorded partly in the band’s own bedrooms and partly at the legendary “Ranch Production House” studio in Southampton. Mixing duties were handled by producer Matt Janke, while Grant Berry of “Fader Mastering” applied the finishing touches to the final masters.
The band first came together at Blueline Studios in Bournemouth during auditions for a vocalist in December 2023. A simple Facebook comment almost overlooked, sparked the meeting between Tia and the remaining members of a recently disbanded hard Rock band. The chemistry was instant, setting the foundation for a new and unique musical project.

The EP opens powerfully with “One Shot”, with frontwoman Tia delivering confident, sassy vocals reminiscent of a Beyoncé-like presence. Her performance is supported by inventive instrumentation and danceable rhythms driven by the tight synchronization of Joey and Ethan, while Tom’s soaring guitar riffs add another dynamic layer. The track launches the Ep with a bold statement of the band’s genre-blending ambitions.
Next comes “New Norm,” a track with wide-ranging appeal that offers plenty for both Rock fans and Rave enthusiasts alike. Infectious and inventive, it highlights the band’s creative versatility, while showcasing each member’s individual talent.
“Void” sees the band exploring darker textures. After a teasing intro, the track dives into industrial-tinged guitar effects, huge drum fills and a driving bass foundation. Tia’s clear vocal melodies cut through the instrumentation effortlessly, while atmospheric screams echo the frustrations conveyed in the track’s relatable lyrics.
“Stay Away” is a raucous assault on the senses and marks a shift in vocal dynamics, with Ethan taking the lead for much of the track, while trading lines with Tia in bursts of harmony. The dual vocals are supported by towering melodic guitars and powerful rhythmic momentum, making it one of the standout moments on the Ep.
With “Calling Out,” Tia returns to the forefront, delivering smooth, expressive vocals over rich instrumental textures. The combined strengths of the band are fully on display here, resulting in a track that feels both cohesive and compelling.
“Blend In” introduces a distinctive groove built around Ethan’s funky slap bass and Joey’s articulate drumming, complemented by Tom’s alternative rock guitar work. Tia’s euphonious vocal performance remains the focal point, supported by Ethan’s harmonies. The song opens with a dramatic sonic “whoosh”, before the bass and guitar drop in and later features a Spanish-style guitar break. Tia’s vocal delivery during this section evokes a tone reminiscent of Dolores O’Riordan of The Cranberries.
The EP closes with the previously unreleased “Chains.” Joey’s ever-present drumming drives the track forward, while Ethan and Tom contribute skilful arrangements, including a notable guitar solo. Flowing synth layers add a modern dimension, giving the song broad contemporary appeal.
The Dorset music scene has long been home to many excellent bands, though it has not always received the recognition it deserves. With Perception, NÆMA have produced an impressive debut that highlights their creative synergy and musical ambition. Combined with their powerful live performances, the band appear well-positioned to step confidently into a much bigger spotlight.
