News: The Race “Family Tree” EP Preview

After a long hiatus, Reading indie rockers The Race are back — and their return feels shaped as much by life as it does by music.

Their forthcoming four-track EP, FAMILY, is a deeply personal collection exploring the passing of time, changing generations, parenthood, faith and the quiet resilience that comes with simply getting older. These are songs written from experience, carrying an emotional weight and maturity that could only come from years spent living life at full tilt.

Musically, The Race have embraced a darker, more atmospheric palette. Shadowy guitars, slowly evolving layers and richly textured arrangements create a cinematic sense of tension, before their trademark cathartic hooks break through the darkness like sunlight after a storm. There is a widescreen quality to the material, but beneath the expansive sound lies something intensely personal — a band reflecting on friendship, family and the desire to create something meaningful amid the relentless demands of everyday life.

At the heart of the EP sits “Family Tree”, an intimate musical letter written at the request of vocalist Dan Buchanan’s son. Built around the powerful and reassuring refrain, “You are enough to be here,” the song delivers a simple yet profound message about growing up, finding your place in the world and having the strength to navigate whatever life throws your way.

There are lessons here about integrity, resilience, mindful words and, perhaps most importantly, knowing that you have people around you who will always have your back. The song also acknowledges the difficult reality that parents cannot always be there to protect their children, while offering the reassurance that family remains an unshakeable foundation: “We’re your family, roots on your tree.”

It is a beautifully human sentiment, giving “Family Tree” a resonance far beyond its immediate subject matter. Love is presented not as something restrictive, but as the stabilising force that gives a child the confidence to grow, explore, make mistakes and weather the storms ahead.

“Best Is Yet To Come” reflects on the peaks and troughs of life — the quiet hope that the people you love will find calmer waters, and the belief that deep friendships can help carry them there. Recorded and self-produced by the band, it sets much of the emotional tone for the EP: reflective, hopeful and unafraid to sit with life’s complexities.

Inspired by Graeme’s daughter undertaking her Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award, “D Of E” is a dreamy, hazy meditation on ageing, changing seasons and the quiet resilience passed down through generations. Personal storytelling intertwines with rich natural imagery, with an oak tree planted beside the river becoming a powerful symbol of steadfastness and faithfulness.

Closing the EP, “Where You Go I Go” explores the vulnerability of watching your children step into the world on their own terms. Its haunting refrain becomes a promise — a declaration that no matter how far they travel or how heavy life becomes, they will never be alone. It is a raw and comforting anthem of unconditional love, capturing the fear, faith and fierce devotion that comes with parenthood.

Formed in Reading in 2004, The Race established a formidable reputation during the mid-2000s, releasing two albums, touring extensively across the UK and Europe and earning appearances at festivals including Reading and Truck. Their career also saw them record live sessions for BBC Radio 1 at Maida Vale, BBC 6 Music — where they became the first unsigned band to record a session for the station at the time — and XFM, alongside releases through Shifty Disco.

Then came the break.

Years passed, families grew — between them, the band now have ten children — and life inevitably changed their perspective. But when The Race finally regrouped, the creative spark was still very much alive. What followed was an unexpected burst of writing and recording, fuelled by long-standing friendship, mutual trust and the desire to make music that genuinely reflected the lives they were now living.

And that may be the most compelling thing about FAMILY.

This isn’t a band attempting to recreate the past or relive their former glory. Instead, The Race have returned with something shaped by experience — emotionally heavier, lyrically wiser and musically more expansive.

There is no sense of nostalgia for nostalgia’s sake here. FAMILY is about where life has taken them, what they have learned along the way and what remains important when the noise of everyday life finally falls away.

If “Family Tree” is anything to go by, FAMILY promises to be a deeply personal and beautifully honest return from a band who have discovered that sometimes the most powerful songs aren’t about escaping real life — they’re about finding meaning within it.
