Pyramid Centre, Portsmouth

Real big Fish

The journey to the Pyramid Centre in Portsmouth was like a pilgrimage to visit the pharaohs of ska rock, Standing almost alone in the middle of the room waiting for the gig to start, up step the “JB Conspiracy” from Guildford, with their two tone roots showing, and tear out a fresh sound that clears the head of all crap and invites you to introduce your feet with the floor repeatedly.

Sound Circus, Bournemouth, 21st January 2012

Its Friday night at Sound Circus and its Punk night. Opening are two piece The Snipers. If the White Stripes became a Punk band they’d be something like this. Neil (badger) is confident on bass,a skill he honed during many years with local blues-rockers Damnation Alley while “Thunder Drums” supplies the er “Thunder”! They open with Gunpowder Girl swiftly followed by “Sanatoium” and “I Don’t Wanna”. The format is simple; 1 2 3 4, heavy bass intro accompanied by a rat a tat style drumbeat!

CD: “Entertainment On Foreign Ground” by Straylings

We have been lucky to get an early copy of the album “Entertainment On Foreign Grounds” by the London based Straylings. Now I listen to a wide range of music, but it has taken ages to put this, albeit short, review together. Why? I just can’t put my finger on what continually draws me back into the album. There is a very haunting feel to the album, as if there is an underlying story unfolding.

MG and the Juggernaut/Albany Down/El Bosco

Gig For A Quid

Mr Kyps’ “gig for a quid” scheme sees many talented bands take to the famous stage and perform alongside local bands, at a price that should see locals flooding in. This month, it’s the turn of Albany Down, a four piece blues rock band from North London who have just released their debut album, “South of the City” (check out our review, from Ross, here). The band’s album can be found in selected HMV stores around the Country (including our local in Poole).

Along with relentless promotion for their album and string of dates across the UK, you get the feeling that this band is taking things seriously. Tonight’s format is slightly different and can only be described as a “local sandwich” with support acts El Bosco, and MG and the Juggernaut playing either side of the blues rock band.

EP: “Maple Trails” by Bear Cavalry

Maple Trails by Bear Cavalry

Whilst in the midst of Winter, it’s quite ironic that I was sent none other than Bear Cavalry’s “Maple Trails” EP, as it is from a band who personify the summer we all know and love. The Gosport based four piece fuse intricate rhythms, African chants, trumpets, falsetto vocals and electro synths to create a genre which can’t be labelled with ease. If I was to make up something, I’d slap them down as a “Tropi-pop” band, simply due to their tropical vibes and pop driven hooks. They have received exposure from BBC Radio 1 and played shows with Rizzle Kicks, Tubelord, Hot Club de Paris and Tall Ships, which has helped earn them a loyal following.

South of the City by Albany Down

London Rockers Albany Down have entrusted their debut long player to us at Rock Regeneration. Despite not being a huge aficionado of this genre its not hard to spot the obvious talent on show here. From the outset on opener “Dirty” through to LP closer “Without You” their Rock influences are worn very openly on their sleeves.

For those of you who aren’t aware of the Canadian music scene, Ten Second Epic is a band from Edmonton who have breached the boundaries of pop rock music time and time again, and shared the stage with the likes of You Me At Six, Kids In Glass Houses, Hedley and A Day To Remember.
