Champions

The Longest Day

As I entered Champions, I was more than a bit worried that there wouldn’t be a great turnout for tonight’s show due to a sudden flash of hesitation caused by a crowd of less than ten people at the last show I saw there. Luckily, organiser Lauren Howard had done a good job and there was a healthy following in the venue before the first band made their way onstage. The show was in aid of The British Heart Foundation and a worthy cause will have helped the numbers flow without a problem.

iBar

The sad news that the Bournemouth iBar is to close on the 14th August has come as a bitter blow to the whole Bournemouth music scene. The Rock Regeneration team has had the pleasure of attending many great nights there, although the venue did not provide the best of facilities the spirit of a blossoming music scene was developing.

O2 Arena, London

Iron Maiden

Gigs don’t really get much better than this, Iron Maiden playing at home, in London at the impressive O2 Arena on the last night of their 95 date ‘Final Frontier’ tour in support of their latest album of the same name . The band have travelled all the world with Bruce Dickinson piloting the plane known as ‘Ed Force One’ bringing their legendary ground breaking music to millions of fanatic fans. The atmosphere tonight is certainly something worth savouring, the venue is full of metal fans from many generations excitedly waiting for possibly one of the best bands in the world to take to the stage.

Kids Can’t Fly/Blue Youth/The Ocean’s Eyes

Champions, Bournemouth

Kids Can't Fly

It was a bleak day before the night began, as the news of local venue iBar’s closure caused a mass response of shock through social networking and probably ruined the promotion of the night. I turned up to Champions to see Kids Can’t Fly waiting outside and after chatting to them, they informed me that there was “no one” inside when there were only five minutes until the scheduled start of the night. I eventually went inside to find the opening band just finishing their sound check with a largely empty room billowing with self pity.

The Winchester, Bournemouth

The Frequency

Its Saturday night and that can only mean one thing at the Winchester,Music Mania. Tonight’s bill is 3 Bournemouth based bands. First up are Peace,Love & Gloves. PL&G are clearly out to make a big impression having brought in a massive following tonight. Aptly named Gloves & Glovettes its more like a ‘hooligan choir’ such is their fervent voice even during the sound check. My editor, one Mr. Chinners has been championing these guys for a while now so lets see what I make of them!

Kodiak Jack: Your Death: My Glory

Recently Kodiak Jack came to my attention, and I was lucky enough to get to listen to their soon to be released album,”Your Death: My Glory”, this Monday, 1st August, in fact. There is always an anticipation when you are about to listen to an album for the first time, especially when you have never heard of the band before. What is it going to be like, am I going to like it, are they any good? Kodiak Jack were more than a pleasant surprise, and one that I have repeatedly listened to a number of times now!

Sound Circus: Battle For Bloodstock - The Finals

Tonight Bournemouth’s very own alternative venue Sound Circus, saw the final of Metal to the Masses take place. With a spot on the unsigned stage at Bloodstock Open Air festival up for grabs, tonight was guaranteed to be a blast. The semis had seen six great local bands get whittled down to the four who were to perform tonight. The big difference was that with this being the finals, they all had to crank up their performances and try and take it to the next level.

Single: “All The Love In The World” by the War Berries

on July 28th, 2011 at 18:52

War Berries

Well, where to start with War Berries. Hailing from Ghent via France & Belgium Thomas Wykes formed War Berries. Current release ‘All The Love in the World’ has a wonderfully festival friendly sound to it. The beat is simple with a hint of flamenco in the guitars. The vocals are light-hearted,almost comical before we get the mid-80’s ‘hair metal’ middle 8 with noodling aplenty. This song is not unpleasant in any way & takes a generous nod toward Flaming Lips territory. With songs like this War Berries wouldn’t be out of place on a Camp Bestival or Larmer Tree Festival bill.

The BIC, Bournemouth

Judas Priest

For the last 40 odd years Judas Priest have been playing their music, releasing classic albums and helping to shape the Heavy Metal genre into the beast it is today. This philosophy of play it loud, fast and make it as entertaining as possible for the fans, has seen them bestowed with the ‘living legends’ tag that is thoroughly deserved! The anticipation of this final tour concert at The BIC is almost tangible!
