CD: “No Cure For Curiosity” by Russ Diapper

on June 29th, 2011 at 12:35
Posted In: CD, Reviews, Jon

“No Cure For Curiosity” is a 12 track blues/rock solo offering, from the lead singer of Gecko, Russ Diapper. It is a interesting mix of the hard edge of gecko, but with a more laid back blues sound. It might even go as far as saying that it almost has a sleazy feel to it, especially when you consider the dirty playing cards on the cover.

Queens of the Stone Age

O2 Academy Bournemouth

Queens Of The Stone Age playing in Bournemouth is a big, no…a huge deal. Not only are they a huge band that have influenced myself and countless other bands/artists around today, but I am certain they will continue to influence rock music for years to come. With the band fresh off of a headline set at Glastonbury, the night was shaping up to be a cracker and not to be missed.

The Eden Project, Cornwall

You’re probably thinking, why the hell do I need to know about some gig in Cornwall? Well, the people of The Eden Project have announced a string of dates with pretty huge bands playing on site. The layout is simple; you arrive, you buy drinks tokens (yes it seems odd at first), then you walk out and see an amazing setting. I wouldn’t class the Eden sessions as gigs, as from 2.30pm the place is flooded with bands playing across two smaller stages around the place, so there is a festival atmosphere brewing throughout the day.

Bournemouth iBar

A free entry show filled with punk pop bands is pretty much my idea of heaven, so there was only one place I was going to be tonight. I was back to my old tricks of arriving earlier than anybody else, though in my defence I figured it would get busy pretty quickly as all three bands playing tonight come under one of the most popular genres there is and it was free.

Bournemouth International Centre

It’s hard to believe that Whitesnake was founded in 1978, when David Coverdale decided to put together a Hard Rock Blues band after his previous outfit Deep Purple split up! New album Nevermore has been lauded by rock critics the world over, gathering solid reviews and chart success. That they are still relevant and producing quality music thirty odd years later is testament to Mr Coverdale’s drive and work ethic!

Joiners Arms, Southampton

Thomas Tantrum return to their home town of Southampton as part of a 10 date headline UK tour, this follows a prestigious support slots with current music press favourites ‘Glasvegas’. After a lot of hard work the word about Thomas Tantrum is spreading slowly but surely. June 2011 sees the release of the band’s 2nd album ‘Mad By Moonlight’ which shows a new change of direction, a new drummer and matured vocal work. The band can be visibly be seen to have upped their game and seemed to have learned well from all their previous musical experiences, their influences such as the B52’s, The Sugarcubes and The Cure can all be clearly heard within their own original style.

Champions, Bournemouth

Hand In Glove Records is a record label from Dorset with one ambition; to bring big bands to the area and give the locals a crack at supporting them. The show was meant to take place at Chords in Poole, but after the beloved venue lost its licence, the show was moved to Champions and brought forward a couple months. This was their first show and they took a gamble by booking Friends Electric at the beginning of the year.
