Live and Unheard, the well-established monthly grassroots original music night at Lighthouse Poole presents its latest Legends concert in the venue’s Theatre space on Thursday 5th February.
The explosive three-act bill features Dorset boogie-woogie piano hero Ben Waters, action-packed pop rocker Chris Payn with his new band The Parade, and local hellraisers par excellence The Outlaw Orchestra.
It’s nearly four decades years since Ben Waters fell in love with blues and boogie woogie piano at blues gigs organised by his family in the pubs of West Dorset. Building a career by following the music he got his first professional job when Jools Holland’s brother Chris asked him to take over his piano stool in Shakin’ Stevens’ band. Ben left school on the spot and has gone on to play with The Rolling Stones, The Beach Boys, Chuck Berry, Ray Davies, Jeff Beck, Johnny Depp, Paul Weller, Rod Stewart and his cousin PJ Harvey among many others.
Chris Payn has won a widespread following with his electrifying vocals and multi-instrumental prowess. Drawing on influences as diverse as Queen, Meat Loaf and David Bowie, he has moulded a sound that sits anywhere between Prince and the 1975. Now backed by The Parade, an amazingly talented line up, his songs take their place at the forefront of an explosive and captivating live show.
Described aptly by one DJ as “the love child of Motorhead and Johnny Cash”, The Outlaw Orchestra exude Saturday night energy with slide and pedal steel guitars, banjo, gravel vocals and solid thumping drums delivering original catchy, hard rocking songs about everyday life laced with deep south spirits, all delivered with British rock ‘n’ roll humour. They have supported Skid Row, The Dead Daisies, The Darkness, Brothers Osbourne, Phil Campbell of Motorhead on tour, Reef, The Kentucky Head hunters and many more.
