EP: “Devilsky” by Devilsky

Devilsky is a project born out of the Covid era. Founder member Simon Davey, disheartened with playing in bands that didn’t truly reflect his passion, set out to build something more authentic — something rooted in the Metal and Grunge influences he grew up with in the 90’s. Piece by piece, Devilsky came together with a simple but powerful aim: to prove that it’s never too late to pursue your dreams. Notably, the band members are all from a more “seasoned” generation — though, as they’d proudly point out, their knees and hips are still holding up just fine.

They wasted no time making their presence known, playing gigs across Hampshire, Dorset and Somerset, alongside a standout, life-affirming performance at the legendary Cart & Horses —famously associated with Iron Maiden. While covers of their favourite artists helped shape their live sets, the real goal was always to create something original. This week marks the culmination of that effort with the release of their debut, self-titled five-track EP.

Recorded at Blue Line Studios by engineer Luke Ayriss — (himself a musician involved in projects such as A Thousand Shall Fall, Traffic Cone Wizard and the Gutter Rats) — the EP captures a raw but purposeful energy.

Track Breakdown

“Devilsky”
The opening track sets the tone perfectly. Inspired by the imagery of a “devil sky” — whether that’s a red dawn, raging fire, or even nuclear glow — the track begins with thunder rolling through a brooding atmosphere before erupting into a surge of heavy, riff-driven Metal. Originally conceived by former guitarist Adam Malone; the song blends gruff vocals with an infectious chorus, making it a strong and fitting introduction.

“Schrödinger’s Pet”
Fans of the Bournemouth scene may recognise this one. Co-written by Simon Davey and Alex Coleman during their time in Die IV You (with Coleman now in Kretinz), the track has been revived and expanded for this EP. The Devilsky version breathes new life into it, offering a heavier and more refined take — with Coleman’s blessing.

“War at My Door”
A deeply personal track written by bassist Ian Morrell, this song began as separate musical and lyrical ideas, before coming together in a burst of creativity. It opens with a melancholic bassline, gradually building tension before exploding into an emotionally charged release. The interplay between sung and screamed vocals adds depth, while the soaring guitar solo provides a memorable highlight.

“No Longer Me”
Arguably one of the EP’s standout tracks, this song showcases the band stretching their creative limits. Built on a powerful opening riff, it blends a wide range of influences without feeling derivative. Thematically, it explores depression and the struggle to overcome it, delivering both weight and hope. Packed with heavy rhythms and a standout guitar solo, it feels destined to become a live favourite — especially for anyone who’s ever worn a Metal ‘battle jacket’.

“Born”
Closing the EP is a track that has been decades in the making. Written by Simon Davey at just 19 and revisited now at 49, “Born” carries a timeless and powerful message: no one is born with hatred or prejudice — it is learned. The song tackles manipulation by political and societal forces, pairing its message with dynamic instrumentation. The rhythm section shines here, supported by explosive, expressive guitar work.

Final Thoughts

Self-titled EP is the sound of a band driven by passion, authenticity and purpose. Devilsky aren’t chasing trends — they’re creating music that reflects who they are and where they’ve come from. There’s a sense of honesty and determination throughout the record that’s hard to ignore.

More than anything, this EP stands as proof that creativity doesn’t have an expiry date. For anyone who’s ever thought they’ve missed their chance, Devilsky offer a powerful reminder: it’s never too late.
