Dorset Music Awards

The last quarter final of the Dorset Music Awards is finally upon us and the last 5 bands are here tonight to battle it out for a place at one of the two Semi-Finals at Mr Kyps in a few weeks time. The Winchester tonight is absolutely rammed and sadly there are people being turned away at the door as the venue has reached it capacity, such is the popularity of these awards. With the venue full, the atmosphere in the place is one of anticipation and excitement as the first band of the night takes to the stage.

Hundred Days

Emerging from the group X-Teller, Hundred Days from Yeovil have emerged with the album “Mission Exodus” pushing their brand of hard rock, as they describe themselves mixing “classic rock, high drama, and fun”.

The album is described as “tell[ing] the story of a near future where the world is split and on the brink of self destruction, reliving the last months of the lives and experiences of people before the inevitable end of the world and half the population leave Earth to find a new home”.

The Winchester Pub hosts this year’s third quarter final of the Dorset Music Awards (DMA). There are six bands on the bill tonight as last week one couldn’t play due to illness. That band was the Dirty Jerkers and so they get the opening slot of the evening. Playing to a Winchester that seems to be made up of musicians (from the other bands), bar staff and us!

Ocean Rooms, Weymouth Pavillion

InMe

Hourglass Promotions haven’t been around too long, yet they have already worked with bands such as Funeral For a Friend, Hadouken, Malefice, and Napalm Death (to name a few) in a valiant attempt to relight the flame of the Weymouth music scene, and tonight spawned yet another prized booking in the shape of Brentwood rock icons, InMe. This band have graced Reading Festival’s main stage and more recently reached over three hundred percent of their required funding for their new album (via the Pledge Music website), “The Pride” which was released on Monday.

CD: “G String Fully Loaded” by Monkeys Uncle

Monkeys Uncle

For a short while now “G String Fully Loaded” has been floating about Rock-Regeneration, waiting for words to be written. Opening with the overly catchy, exceedingly poppy but effective, “Memphis”. I was not sure what I was about to listen to. I first heard Monkeys Uncle live at the Dorset Music Awards (Second Heat), with this track being one of the two performed that day.

EP: “Mechanical Hearts” by This Fall

This Fall

Personally, “Mechanical Hearts” has probably been my most anticipated EP/Album to date, as previous recordings and live shows have dictated that Weymouth based post hardcore five piece; This Fall are headed for big things this year. This dictation was spurred on as the band took their ideas to The Ranch Production House, an established studio tending for the likes of Kids Can’t Fly, and Burn The Fleet in the past. After announcing support slots for titans; InMe, and Funeral For a Friend this year, it was unsurprising that this band were ready to take the necessary step up, as the EP will also be featured and reviewed in Rock Sound magazine on the day of its release date.

Anvil, Bournemouth

The brothers Grimmer

Western Sand kick off the Anvil’s first live music event with their 70’s tinged classic rock blasting out around the small venue. Quality songs and excellent musicianship combine to make an impression on those gathered. Duelling guitars and a powerhouse rhythm section get the Anvil crowd in a party mood.

Single: “Valentine” by Constellation

Constellation

“Valentine” is the second single release from possibly Bournemouth’s best up and coming band right now, Constellation. It is clearly a step up from debut single “The Flower Song” which achieved the dizzy heights of number 40 on the official download chart-no pressure then! This latest release shows a real maturity in the bands development and where this reviewer thought on first listen it was simply “ok”, “Valentine” has proved to be a real grower.

Not only is it the last stop on their winter tour, it is their homecoming gig so there’s guaranteed to be a great atmosphere.
