Champions, Bournemouth

20110211 - Willowen

Tonight Miles Hunt and Erica Nockells of the mighty band The Wonder Stuff were supposed to be gracing the stage at Champions. However a last minute phone call from the band’s manager to the venue’s promoter stated that they had cancelled at very short notice. As it was a Friday night and a decent crowd was expected, the Champion’s staff hastily turned things around and arranged free entry gig and for the three pre-arranged supports acts to provide the evenings entertainment.

‘Powerpop’ is a genre that I don’t come across that often, but I’m glad I did come across it in the form of Bristol five piece, ‘We Start Partys’ who describe themselves as a band known for their ‘pop hooks, floor-filling drops, and screaming guitars, backed by pure energy and passion’.

The Neon Tigers/The Hops/Brothers Grimmer

Champions, Bournemouth

This is no ordinary night of music at Champions, as for the first time since popular Bournemouth band ‘Clams’ broke up, the disbanded members have shared the stage. As soon as I walked in I could sense that there was a subtle emotional charge to this night as members from The Hops and The Neon Tigers are seen scattered across the room sharing memories of their former glory with their fans. It is obvious that the bands still share a strong friendship and want to enable old fans of ‘Clams’ to move on and love their new outfits just as much.

Ricky Warwick is former front man with metal band The Almighty and also more recently successful solo artist in his own right with three quality solo albums behind him to date. Ricky gets the call to join a regrouped Thin Lizzy featuring original members Scott Gorham, Brian Downey, Darren Wharton along with Def Leppard’s Viv Campbell and Whitesnake’s Marco Mendoza…he thinks about it for ten seconds and says “Yes”! Thin Lizzy are a band that Ricky followed when he was young living in Northern Ireland, he was introduced to them by his older sisters and watched them on ‘Top of the Pops when he was 10 years old.

Mr. Kyps, Poole

Lady Winwoods MaggotAfter Christmas when money is too tight to mention, an offer of free entry to a gig at Mr Kyps before 9pm is an offer too good to refuse especially if the headliners are Dorset Music Awards finalists ‘Lady Winwoods Maggot’. The four piece death western specialists are promoting their recently released and impressive album ‘Buffalohead’ which combines a complete mix of styles making for very interesting listening experience.

Sound Circus, Bournemouth

From Desert Storm

The Metal Hammer sponsored rock club Redeemer is held every Friday night at The Sound Circus in Bournemouth. The venue has a rocking reputation so we went along to check out the vibe! Unable to get to venue in time for the 2 support bands, Western Sand who I’ve seen several times and are always a class act and Brainsaw who I’ve yet to see, but have been reliably informed that they were very good!
