Artemis

Ballsy Girl/Punks, Bubble-gum Poppers, Girl/Grungers (insert or delete where necessary) ‘Artemis’ release the follow up to ‘Hold Me Down’ in the shape of “Reckless (Moan For Me)”. Initially there’s more than a nod to Lauren Tate (Hands Off Gretel) in Yianna’s vocal. Fenella’s heavy snare hitting, allied to Frankie’s chunky guitars and a layered vocal on what seems to be a ‘fornication song’ or a plea for affection maybe? I’m reminded of Electric Six’s ‘Gay Bar’ in the guitars in the bridge, but one imagines this is purely coincidental. The yelps and shrieks in the main vocal give it a heartfelt honesty that is very de rigueur in today’s scene, but altogether this is a decent second single. Frankie’s guitar is the star here as it winds its way around the length of the entire song, while the “da,da,da,da ooh’s” towards the end give it a light-hearted feel before the abrupt finish.

Artemis

This genre seems to be attracting new talent all the time, so it’s a case of whether or not a band can stay the course. Artemis aren’t afraid to put in the hard yards, playing at all the stellar venues their hometown Southampton has to offer, as well as shows in the Capital. Too many bands of their ilk crash and burn after barely an album’s worth of material to their name, but Artemis seem to be on the right track with their live output alone. I wish them well and will watch and listen (from a distance) with interest.
