On Thursday 10th July, Matt, Richard and Rob “aka” Dorset band The Eyebrow Wives triumphantly returned to the stage after an extended hiatus. A host of fans, family and friends took their place in Chaplin’s Cellar Bar on one of the hottest days of the year to show their support and to see if the trio could still cut it? Acting as support were Hampshire’s “Interesting Wallpaper” and despite a few technical issues which experienced in house tech Conrad Barr took care of, the band sounded great. Performing a mix of old and new material the audience was treated to a fine set.
The reformation was not just by chance, the guys all felt there was unfinished business and before their first gig back they got together and recorded a three track EP of brand new songs. Bassist Rob Joyce describes his take on the band: “Imagine if Lou Reed took a detour through the May Day fields of rural Dorset. If Tom Waits had a pint with the Green Man. If The Doors played a set on the village green before a bare-knuckle brawl??? Welcome to the world of The Eyebrow Wives. Blending Post/Punk swagger with Gothic/Folk surrealism, our songs are 100% original, rooted in the forgotten soil of rural England—celebrating such ancient traditions as Sin Eating, May Day festivals and illegal bare-knuckle boxing.
The opening track is a tune called “Whistle Man”, with a burst of drums and some Red Hot Chilli Peppers Rock-style guitar and funky bass.
The dual vocals sound gruff and weathered and suit the sound, there are also some nice guitar aerobics to enjoy. “Sour Milk” is a different proposition altogether and it sounds a little like a skiffle band set up in the corner of the pub, delivering their tune to a willing audience.
Once again the combined vocals provide the character and charm to the delivery of the lyrics. The final track of this collection is “Sin Eater” and in my opinion this is the best of the three, it’s has an infectious theme with a catchy chorus that makes the tune memorable.
The EP is the sound of three guys getting in a room and having a good deal of fun, picking up where they left off many years ago. They are all the same people just with a little more years under the belts and a bit more experience.
