The Winchester,Bournmouth

Dan Hammond Smith

It’s acoustic night at the Winchester and local promoter Dom Patience of “Chalk Inc. Promotions” has gathered together a diverse line up of acts for the evening’s entertainment. Tonight’s headliner is none other than Dan Hammond Smith of The Frequency and formerly of The Other half, this is Dan’s first excursion into solo acoustic performance, and he has promised to bring along a few guests to help him out. The Frequency are currently preparing to release their as yet unnamed debut album on the 1st June when they play Mr Kyps in Poole supporting the “Pigeon Detectives”

Happy Mondays/Inspiral Carpets

Happy Mondays

On a busy Wednesday evening we’re here early to witness two of the most seminal bands of one of music’s most enduring “scenes” – we’re talking “baggy” here! The venue is at least half full now as we await the Inspiral Carpets. On they stride, one by one. Last on is original singer Mr. Stephen Holt who immediately “assumes the pose”, constantly leaning forward all through the set. The setlist is a fan’s dream (excluding material from The Beast Inside).

The moshpits of the early 90’s have all but disappeared but there is a buzz in the room as we all sing along to “She Comes In The Fall”. The hits keep coming while the applause is loud. They play a new song (who’s title escapes me) which has a definite Stranglers (1990 era) feel to it, which also goes down well.

CD: “Battle Scars” by Galahad

Galahad

I’m a rock and metal man (music that is, not literally) but I’ve always had a healthy appreciation for the progressive side of rock. Mainly the huge bands of the 70’s (Yes, Genesis, King Crimson, Caravan) that used to take up whole album sides with one song. But more recently modern bands like Opeth, Mastodon, and Dream Theater, have been mixing metal/hard rock with these 70’s influences and as a direct result have re-awakened my interest in the genre.

CD: “Rise Of The Fenix” Tenacious D

on May 8th, 2012 at 21:48
Posted In: CD, Reviews, George

Six years, two men. Only one thing can unfold, and that is a brand new album by the world renowned mock rock duo; Tenacious D. Since the release of sophomore album and film soundtrack “The Pick of Destiny”, the band faced hard times following poor reviews and difficulties in morale following the media glorifying Jack Black’s position in the band over lead guitarist, Kyle Gass due to Black’s status as a Hollywood actor. Luckily they managed to pull themselves together and have produced their third studio album, along with the likes of Dave Grohl (Drums), John Konesky (Electric Guitar) and John Spiker (multi instruments) as their backing band.

EP: “Why We Fight” by Military Arcade

Military Arcade

When I hear a new of a new young band who have a sizeable influence from 80/90’s melodic rockers Big Country, my ears immediate stand to attention to listen and to find out what it’s all about. Thatcham, Berkshire three piece “Military Arcade” are far to young to remember the original Big Country back when they 1st started in 1982, however apparently their parents were huge fans and this influence has been passed on in a big way, as well as other sizable influences from U2, Nirvana and The Beatles, there is certainly no shame in rifling through your parents record collection as you never know what you might discover, sadly in my case all I found was Johnny Mathis, Barry Manilow and Barbara Streisand.

Bandalism 2

O2 Academy, Bournemouth

Featuring: Kings Mews, Saturday Sun, Sirpico, Empire Affair, Constellation , Butcher Blues Foundation and Lady Winwood’s Maggot

Bandalism

Bandalism is an event thought up and arranged by local promoters “Whitehall Events” to showcase local bands, giving them a chance to perform on a large stage in front of larger audiences than they are normally used to. This is the 2nd event of this kind after the 1st in October 2011 was a complete success with both bands and music fans, with them all giving it a big thumbs up. This year the format has changed slightly in the fact an acoustic stage has been added in the upstairs bar to increase the entertainment and add further value for money. Despite the event slightly clashing with the later kick off of 17:15 for FA Cup Final, thankfully the football did no go to extra time and penalties, so the first band hit the main stage at exactly 20:00.

The Subways/Royal Republic/Turbowolf

Old Fire Station, Bournemouth

The Subways

It’s 19:30 and due to an unfeasibly early start to tonight’s gig, (7pm) I’ve missed almost all of Turbowolf’s half hour set. What I do see is great applause given to these hairy Rockers as they exit the stage. Not long after Sweden’s Royal Republic take to the stage. Instantly we are met by the almost 7ft frame of singer Adam Grahn and his equally impressive “tache” to boot! These guys can be summed up in one word-cliche! They are a 4 piece big in confidence and big in riffs. Its hard to pin down all the influences but Royal Republic are consummate entertainers. Mid-song banter and gurning are the order of the day/night but these guys can play. Vocally they remind me of Scandinavian under-achievers Span but musically its the hair-metal posing and shape shifting that keeps us entertained. Set highlight ‘Underwear’ gets a great big cheer but Adam is more concerned with getting ‘arms in the air’ on this, their first trip to Bournemouth. They also receive great applause from this largely young student audience.
