CD: “Rise Of The Fenix” Tenacious D

on May 8th, 2012 at 21:48
Posted In: CD, Reviews, George

Six years, two men. Only one thing can unfold, and that is a brand new album by the world renowned mock rock duo; Tenacious D. Since the release of sophomore album and film soundtrack “The Pick of Destiny”, the band faced hard times following poor reviews and difficulties in morale following the media glorifying Jack Black’s position in the band over lead guitarist, Kyle Gass due to Black’s status as a Hollywood actor. Luckily they managed to pull themselves together and have produced their third studio album, along with the likes of Dave Grohl (Drums), John Konesky (Electric Guitar) and John Spiker (multi instruments) as their backing band.

EP: “Why We Fight” by Military Arcade

Military Arcade

When I hear a new of a new young band who have a sizeable influence from 80/90’s melodic rockers Big Country, my ears immediate stand to attention to listen and to find out what it’s all about. Thatcham, Berkshire three piece “Military Arcade” are far to young to remember the original Big Country back when they 1st started in 1982, however apparently their parents were huge fans and this influence has been passed on in a big way, as well as other sizable influences from U2, Nirvana and The Beatles, there is certainly no shame in rifling through your parents record collection as you never know what you might discover, sadly in my case all I found was Johnny Mathis, Barry Manilow and Barbara Streisand.

O2 Academy, Bournemouth

Bandalism

Bandalism is an event thought up and arranged by local promoters “Whitehall Events” to showcase local bands, giving them a chance to perform on a large stage in front of larger audiences than they are normally used to. This is the 2nd event of this kind after the 1st in October 2011 was a complete success with both bands and music fans, with them all giving it a big thumbs up. This year the format has changed slightly in the fact an acoustic stage has been added in the upstairs bar to increase the entertainment and add further value for money. Despite the event slightly clashing with the later kick off of 17:15 for FA Cup Final, thankfully the football did no go to extra time and penalties, so the first band hit the main stage at exactly 20:00.

The Subways/Royal Republic/Turbowolf

Old Fire Station, Bournemouth

The Subways

It’s 19:30 and due to an unfeasibly early start to tonight’s gig, (7pm) I’ve missed almost all of Turbowolf’s half hour set. What I do see is great applause given to these hairy Rockers as they exit the stage. Not long after Sweden’s Royal Republic take to the stage. Instantly we are met by the almost 7ft frame of singer Adam Grahn and his equally impressive “tache” to boot! These guys can be summed up in one word-cliche! They are a 4 piece big in confidence and big in riffs. Its hard to pin down all the influences but Royal Republic are consummate entertainers. Mid-song banter and gurning are the order of the day/night but these guys can play. Vocally they remind me of Scandinavian under-achievers Span but musically its the hair-metal posing and shape shifting that keeps us entertained. Set highlight ‘Underwear’ gets a great big cheer but Adam is more concerned with getting ‘arms in the air’ on this, their first trip to Bournemouth. They also receive great applause from this largely young student audience.

CD: “The Modern Shape” by Burn The Fleet

Burn The Fleet

So finally at last I get my hands on the much anticipated new “Burn The Fleet” album and despite being prepared to fork out for it, it came free with a copy of Rock Sound magazine. The Southampton band fronted by Andrew Convey has been around on the local music scene for a while thrilling audiences with tracks from the debut EP’s which includes the excellent live favourite “Handfuls of Sand”. Burn The Fleet are fan’s of Californian post hardcore experimental rock band “Thrice” and the “Burn The Fleet” name actually came from one of their songs from the “The Alchemy Index” album.

EP: “The Cure” by Kissimmee

Kissimmee

Alt/Punk band Kissimmee have a new EP out containing 5 tracks. Lead track “This City” has a Pop/Rock feel to it from the outset. The guitar riff throughout is great while the whole song is very “radio friendly”, as are most of the tracks on this EP. On “What I’m Worth” I can definitely hear a Chrissie Hynde-esque vocal but the influences end there. The lyrics appear heartfelt, almost personal. The guitars are very Pop/Rock once again but this is no criticism of this ballady little number. “Corey” once again is very personal, perhaps about a past relationship.

CD: “Forked Tongues” By Desert Storm

Desert Storm

First I have to apologise as I was given this album a bloody year ago to review and I dropped it on my iPod and it hasn’t been off it since. Every time a track of theirs came on the shuffle I rebuked myself of not having reviewed it yet, then something else always came along and my goldfish like mind wandered off on to something else. But it’s a testament to strength of the music that their album sat happily on my pod with the likes of Clutch, Down, Kyuss, Trouble & Red Fang and wasn’t a bit out of place.

CD: “Time To Grow” By We Caught The Castle

We Caught the Castle

Southeast Powerpop/Rock/Post Hardcore act We Caught the Castle have a new LP out called Time to Grow. Having had a good listen in full I can confirm it is rather good! They employ an idea few bands use where they open with an instrumental track that melds nicely into track 2 and title track ‘Time to Grow’. Deliberate or accidental? You decide! Either way it works.
