CD: Heavy Manic Souls

Heavy Manic Souls

We seem to be spreading our wings here, French band Heavy Manic Souls have recently sent us a copy of their eponymous debut album, which is an 11 track blues fused heavy to classic rock which may prove hard for them to top! Now I would not have considered France to be a source of hard rocking guitar riffs, but I am happy to be proven wrong. And this album proves it without a shadow of doubt.

The Old Fire Station, Bournemouth

Newton Faulkner

A dreary and somewhat depressing hue had been thrown over Bournemouth over recent days. Facing the wet weather did not appear to be an issue for tonight’s gig goers. The old fire station in Bournemouth has been home to some amazing shows recently, my favourite being Frank Turner last year. Comparatively, both shows were sold out. Newton seems to have ducked off of the radar in recent times, not releasing any material since 2009.

EP: “Always Hunting You” by Reventure

Reventure

Initially I had no idea where to start with Reventure. They describe themselves as “Four piece Electronic/Hardcore band from Winchester”…they have a unique sound, mixing Dubstep and Trance with Hardcore Rock and metal, similar to “Enter Shikari”, and “Bring Me The Horizon”, and have released several self-made music videos which are on their YouTube channel.

St Georges Day Shindig

the Winchester, Bournemouth

Featuring Kentucky Fight Club,The Gutter Rats, Slap Dash Picks and Tim Somerfield

Shindig

It’s St. Georges day,its damp and inside The Winchester all is quiet! For this event,in its 3rd year I believe, its not looking good. The bands and girlfriends aside its sparse to say the least. Everything seems to have conspired against this night. Bad weather, a Monday night, even the Gutter Rats bassist has had to pull out through work! These facts aside the talent on offer is diverse and enjoyable. Opening is Tim “Afro Ninja” Somerfield who gives us a few originals and covers. He apologises for opening with a cover by Yank Rockers Kerbdog, on St. Georges night! We forgive him as he rattles through a confident set including the Foo’s “Everlong” and Chilli’s “Zephyr”. St. George would be proud!

Twin Atlantic/The Xcerts/Me

Wedgwood Rooms, Portsmouth

Twin Atlantic

On a thoroughly blustery, rainy Sunday we arrive just in time to catch the first band on tonight’s bill. Simply named “Me” these Aussie Retro-Rockers take to the stage. Imagine if you will a cloned Small Faces with Keith Moon on drums and this is the sight before you. As for the music there’s a whole mash-up of styles which (to me) begin in the early 70’s! Take a lead from any of the following-Sparks, T Rex, Queen, right through to Pulp, Muse, JJ72 (delete or add where appropriate) and still you only get half the picture!

Joiners Arms, Southampton

Gavin Butler & Neil Starr

When the front men of two incredible British bands come together and decide to work alongside each other, either triumph or disaster awaits their experimental urges. Luckily, Gavin Butler (The Blackout) and Neil Starr (Attack! Attack! UK) grasped the concept to transform their rock based roots into the acoustic album “Ghosts and Echoes”. It’s a simple concept; each artist writes five songs and you tour the record across the country together.
