O2 Academy, Bournemouth

5th May 2012

Bandalism

Last October an rather adventurous project called “Bandalism” was started by local promotors “Whitehall Events” which put together a line up of eight local bands to appear at the Bournemouth O2 Academy, the evening was a roaring success with bands such as Fearne, The Frequency, Constellation, Brothers Grimmer, Empire Affair, Sirpico, New Royalty and One Dead Ninja putting in some stunning performances on the large O2 stage, our review of the event can be found here.

Sirpico

A quiet, and chilly Saturday night sees me down at The Anvil, formerly The Ibar, at the Lansdowne end of Bournemouth. Unfortunately tonights 3 set line-up as shrunk to just two as Sepia Daze are unable to attend. But, still for the nominal £1 entry it is still complete value for money.

Single: “Union” by The Terraces

The Terraces

Union is the first single to be lifted from the self-titled album by London/Melbourne Punks ‘The Terraces’. With a moniker like that one is immediately drawn to memories of late 70’s Britain. Former One Way System singer Gary Buckley (vox) has a distinct vocal style with echoes of one J. Strummer.

Upbeat Festival

Scrap any plans you may have had for this year’s August bank holiday, because the Mr Kyps Upbeat Festival is back!

Following on from the runaway success that was last year’s inaugural Upbeat Festival, Mr Kyps will once again be taking over Upton Country Park this coming August Bank Holiday for three days of family fun, great music and glorious sunshine.

Last year’s festival featured such internationally recognised artists such as Imelda May, Sandi Thom and Toploader, plus an entire day devoted to the cream of the crop of Britain’s tribute acts.

On he Rocks, Bouremouth

Mikey Ball

Tonight at On The Rocks in Bournemouth the pace slows down from the high energy rock nights of the past few weeks, tonight is all about the singer and song, headliner Mikey Ball from New Milton is a song writer with a great pedigree who has been performing solo for over 7 years, with plenty of great festival appearances under his belt along with national radio airplay on Radio 2, tonight is a rare chance to see Mikey in a great intimate seaside setting.

CD: “She” by Billy Vincent

Billy Vincent

Billy Vincent, a London based quintent, who almost defy a category, but I would place them a modern day English folk with classic rock tendencies, with a hint of Brit-Pop, but also a range of styles that spring off from there, with possibly the odd nod towards Rob Thomas.

Paradise Lost/Insomnium

The Brook, Southampton

Paradise Lost

Completely missed the first band Vierd but second band Insomnium were bleeding awesome. Melodic Death Metal with power metal guitars turned up to the max. They hail from Finland and put on a very accomplished live show. Which isn’t surprising as they formed in 1999 and have five full length albums under their belts. Their latest opus One For Sorrow has gathered some rave reviews. Windmill headbanging, furious guitars licks and guttural vocals nicely prepare The Brook for the headliners.
