CD: “Totem Bells” by Twelve Feet of Clay

Twelve Feet of Clay

Totem Bells is the debut album from Cambridge based band Twelve Clay Feet. The four piece is made up of twins Ian and Jay Jeffs (Lead vocals and guitar respectively), Ollie Porsa (Bass) and Bob Radford (Drums). The bands style of music has a very relaxed feel to it. It is very much geared up for radio play with an indie-pop-rock vibe. Singer Jay uses his husky rock friendly voice to good effect on tracks like Sarajevo Bombs and Sour Rum and the rest of the band are all accomplished musician’s but I thought that they could have given the songs a harder rock feel.

The Rifles

On a mild spring evening in Bournemouth we await the arrival of Chingford’s finest. But, first up are local act “Streebeck”. This 5 piece Bournemouth based band play a nice little brand of Country-tinged Indie. They open with a bouncy little number called “Spare A Thought” which is well received from a half full venue. The vocals are audible throughout while the overall sound is clean and crisp with a “Folky” beat in places.

CD: “Kingsnake” by Russ Diapper

Russ Diapper

Kingsnake is the latest solo offering from Russ Diapper, and he appears to show no signs of taking it easy! This is his second solo album, following on from his successful “No Cure for Curiosity”. This album is just as “bluesy” than “No Cure For Curiosity”, but sticks to Russ’s hard rock principles, easily showing his influences, and for this listener (at the moment) the strongest seems to be hints of the album “Your Filty Little Mouth”.

One of the hottest bands in the 70’s and early eighties were Scottish rockers Nazareth. They really exploded on the scene after supporting Deep Purple in 1972 and have been consistently recording & touring their strong brand of Hard Rock ever since.

TakeDown Festival

Southampton University

TakeDown

Southampton University’s student union was completely taken over by 35 bands performing over four stages for the Takedown Festival 2012, the festival has brought together a host of local up and coming bands along with some great major headliners from the world of alternative rock. The Festival organisers should be heartily congratulated as on arrival at the site everything was so easy, no huge queues to collect entry wristbands, great sign- posting to ensure ease of moving around the buildings and most importantly a clear list of when where and what time all bands were playing. The only problem with four stages like with any festival there was always going to be a clash of bands and it was difficult to see every band you wanted.
