CD: “This is Our Way Out” by Goodluck Jonathan

on July 9th, 2011 at 14:39
Posted In: CD, Reviews, George

Goodluck Jonathan is the 14th and current president of Nigeria, but also a band who create a sound which mixes up elements of genres from mellow indie, dance and rock. They aren’t afraid to let the intensity of their percussion sway them into the beloved rock category which is achieved through thundering drums and a heavy injection of almost seductive bass lines in their songs. If this doesn’t appeal to you, then turn away and get back to your scrabble set.

When Dom Patience from Chalk Ink Promotions announced that hardcore punk stalwarts Gallows were coming back to Bournemouth, I was bloody ecstatic! An intimate show at the IBar with 99 other fans…this was going to be intense!

The Joiners, Southampton

This was my first visit to the Joiners in Southampton and I instantly fell in love with the place. The sound was good, the stage and lighting set up was great and it was well laid out, it is clear why many big names come and play here in the early days of their careers. There were five bands in the line-up tonight, which meant that we were treated to a sample of songs from each of them and I found myself definitely wanting to see more from every act that played.

Bashley Village Hall

Raising money for charity by putting on gigs is nothing new, Bob Geldof perfected the art first in 1985 at Live Aid. On a much smaller scale with a similar aim caring Mother Jacqui Charge has taken it upon herself to try and raise the money required to get her son Nic a new wheelchair, to make his life just that much easier. Jacqui along with an army of close friends and family have booked the local village hall with 5 top local bands as the evenings entertainment.

Weymouth Pavilion

Sepultura announce surprise date in… Weymouth?! That’s definitely a surprise. Weymouth is not a place exactly notorious for its thriving music scene, though all that looks like it could change with Hourglass Promotions having recently announced some pretty big shows at the Pavilion, this one included. I have never been to the Pavilion before, and I was worried what state the place would be in by the end of the evening as the building looked rather rickety and the windows seemed to be held together with sellotape. Luckily inside was a lot better, and all in all it seems a pretty decent venue.

CD: “No Cure For Curiosity” by Russ Diapper

on June 29th, 2011 at 12:35
Posted In: CD, Reviews, Jon

“No Cure For Curiosity” is a 12 track blues/rock solo offering, from the lead singer of Gecko, Russ Diapper. It is a interesting mix of the hard edge of gecko, but with a more laid back blues sound. It might even go as far as saying that it almost has a sleazy feel to it, especially when you consider the dirty playing cards on the cover.

Queens of the Stone Age

O2 Academy Bournemouth

Queens Of The Stone Age playing in Bournemouth is a big, no…a huge deal. Not only are they a huge band that have influenced myself and countless other bands/artists around today, but I am certain they will continue to influence rock music for years to come. With the band fresh off of a headline set at Glastonbury, the night was shaping up to be a cracker and not to be missed.
