Tonight is the very first live outing for a group of talented musicians who have joined forces to form a local so called “supergroup” called “Minor Characters”. The group features Martin Ruddock on guitar/vocals (Hipster/Mirrorball), Angus Rudd on guitar/vocals (Henry’s Photograph, Brave Mariner, Powdered Cows), Ed Pope on bass (Mutant Vinyl, Cellar Creeps, Country Hospital), and Paul ‘Dixie’ Harley on drums (Spiders/Marlins).

On a balmy night I’m here at a new venue (to me) to witness the debut performance by local “experimentalists” Electromud. On The Rocks has a healthy gathering of friends and new fans alike in attendance this evening. I already know this is going to be a great gig when I hear the soundcheck. Equally its gonna be a loud affair! Electromud are fronted by none other than former Subatomics frontman Matt Upchuck. The band open with “I Am a Grinding Piston” which is heavy on feedback and a slightly messy opener but they stick with it gainfully.

Due to a hectic day moving house I have missed tonight’s openers Monty, who I’m reliably informed gave a decent account of themseves despite some “technical issues”!
Agatha’s Garden take to the stage with little fuss & delve straight into their set of mostly original material. They open with “Tower of Dreams” and set their stall out early.

Some where in the darker recesses of Bournemouth lurk the 4 piece known as Skeleton Kid, and they have recently released a 3 track EP called “The Graveyard Disciples”, and are using it as a Mission Statement to leave a trail of booze, sex and cigarettes in their wake.

The Skints are hopefully beginning to like Bournemouth as this is their third trip here this year, they have played Bournemouth O2 Academy supporting “You Me At Six”, and the Old Fire Station supporting “Less Than Jake”. They are currently riding on the crest of wave with a very hectic summer ahead of them full of music festivals. Tonight’s show is a special “one off” warm up show for a this run of Festivals, it much more intimate affair than the band have been used to recently at the Winchester Pub in front of around 150 people. This gig is by no means a secret and by the time the doors open a sizeable queue has formed along the side of the building.

Following the release of this year’s A Different Kind Of Fix, Bombay Bicycle Club are set to play a special one-off show on Thursday 23rd August at O2 Academy Bournemouth.
Formed at school in north London in 2006, the band won a competition to play at that year’s V festival, released two EPs the next year and wrote their debut album, I Had the Blues But I Shook Them Loose, while still at school. It came out in 2009 and went gold. 2010 saw the band take a left-turn with the folk-influenced Flaws, which included covers of Joanna Newsom and John Martyn.

Bournemouth based stoner doom crew Skeleton opened the proceedings and floor me with how much they have progressed since I saw ’em last at Venomfest. Much tighter and more practiced, they put in a very good turn. The songs sound huge and it’s a shame that the majority of the crowd haven’t arrived yet as they would have gained some new fans.
